Adab Towards Neighbors (Especially as a Roommate)

In Islam, showing good adab (manners) towards neighbors, including roommates, is a sacred duty emphasized by the Prophet ﷺ, who taught that one should treat neighbors with kindness, respect, and consideration—whether by keeping shared spaces clean, lowering one’s voice to avoid disturbance, or offering help when needed. As roommates, this means being mindful of each other’s comfort, privacy, and schedules, avoiding unnecessary conflicts, and resolving disagreements with patience and wisdom. Maintaining good adab fosters harmony, trust, and mutual respect, transforming living spaces into peaceful environments. Beyond immediate benefits like a happier home, these manners also strengthen one’s character, cultivate empathy, and earn Allah’s pleasure, as the Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him be good to his neighbor" (Bukhari). Ultimately, practicing adab in daily life nurtures a society built on compassion and cooperation.

Ihsan in My Three Roles

1. As a Student

To me, ihsan (excellence) as a student means striving for knowledge with sincerity, discipline, and deep respect for my teachers and peers. It’s not just about grades, but about seeking understanding with the intention of benefiting myself and others. Ihsan pushes me to go beyond the minimum—asking thoughtful questions, helping classmates, and seeing education as worship when pursued with a pure heart. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah loves when one of you does a task, to perfect it" (Bayhaqi), reminding me that even studying is an act of devotion when done with excellence.

2. As a Daughter

In this role, ihsan means honoring my parents with unwavering kindness, patience, and gratitude—not just in actions, but in my attitude. It’s about serving them joyfully, speaking gently even when tired, and remembering that their rights over me are second only to Allah’s. Ihsan here is a spiritual practice: the Quran links gratitude to parents with gratitude to Allah ("Be grateful to Me and to your parents" 31:14). It means caring for them as they once cared for me, not out of obligation, but with the love and excellence that pleases Allah.

3. As a Servant of Allah

As His servant, ihsan is the highest level of faith—"to worship Allah as if you see Him" (Hadith Jibril). To me, this means infusing every moment with God-consciousness: praying with focus, forgiving others for His sake, and seeing His mercy in challenges. Ihsan is not perfection, but consistent effort to align my heart, words, and deeds with His pleasure—whether in solitude or public. It’s the thread tying my roles together: excelling as a student and daughter because I’m a servant of Allah first.

Usrah 1 is usually taken in the first year, and it’s more about bonding with your group, building ukhuwah, and learning the basics like IIUM’s vision and mission through simple activities such as ice-breaking, sharing sessions, and light community service. After that comes Usrah 2, which is more focused on leadership, responsibility, and giving back to the community through bigger projects, volunteering, and teamwork with a wider circle. In short, Usrah 1 is about self-growth and bonding, while Usrah 2 is about applying those values in real contributions to society.

WISH

I wish that in the future, I will become a person who is useful for others, strong in faith, and gentle in heart. I hope my journey at IIUM not only makes me successful in academics but also helps me grow as a Muslimah who carries knowledge with humility. In the future, I wish to look back and say, “Alhamdulillah, I lived with sabar, I learned with ikhlas, and I loved with sincerity.” 🌸

FEEDBACK

My experience in Usrah 2 has been really meaningful because it taught me not only about leadership and responsibility, but also about the importance of applying Islamic values in daily life. I feel very blessed to have Sister Iman as my instructor because she is such a friendly and generous person. She always makes the class feel warm and comfortable, and sometimes I feel like she is more like a sister than a teacher. I really love her sharing sessions because they are full of wisdom and also very sincere. I truly hope that I can take care of this friendship and ukhuwah forever, even after the class ends.

ROLE PLAY GROUP 1 : SABAR

During Usrah 2, our group was the first to present, and our topic was about sabar. We related the story to our own experiences as students, which made it more meaningful and easier to connect with. Honestly, I was so proud of my group because we did really well, even better than I expected. What touched me the most was when Balqis, my groupmate, completely nailed her role—she even cried during the role play, which made the whole presentation feel so real and emotional. Through this experience, I felt very grateful because it brought me closer to Balqis and Zulaikha, and our bond grew stronger after the presentation. I really hope I can take care of this friendship and ukhuwah forever, because it’s something special that I will always treasure. For me, sabar is not only about staying calm when life hurts, but also about learning from every test that Allah gives. It feels like a long journey where every challenge teaches me something new—patience with people, patience with time, and patience with myself. Sometimes when I listen to certain songs about struggle and hope, I feel reminded that life is not always smooth, but sabar makes the rough path bearable. Maybe sabar is like a quiet melody in the background of life—people might not notice it, but it gives rhythm and strength to the heart. In the end, being sabar is not just waiting for problems to end, but becoming stronger and wiser while walking through them.
