Why I Chose This Book

I chose the "Red Pyramids" because it was appealing to me due to its core being based off of Egyptian mythology. I have a very avid interest in books based off of mythology and I am always curious to explore new and different cultures than my own. Also the image of the front of the book is very tempting and only does it not invite you to read the book due to its very intimidating look, its dull red tones also makes it easy on the eyes as well.

One of the main themes of the Red Pyramid is "Good vs Evil", since the two main characters in the book (Carter and Sadie) have to fight against the main antagonist of the series (Set, god of evil). Another theme that comes up a lot is family since due to the seperation of Carter and Sadie at a really young age due to their mother's death, they have not really connected at all and this deathly situation has brought them closer in many ways than one. Lastly, the theme of trust surfaces once in a while because the storyline of this book is depended on who and what Sadie and Carter trust in and what that person or object will do for them.

"We only have a few hours, so listen carefully. If you're hearing this story, you're already in danger. Sadie and I might be your only chance. Go to the school. Find the locker. I won't tell you which school or which locker, because if you are the right person, you'll find it. The combination is 13/32/33"

This is how the author opens up the opening and I say that it is a very intruiging way to start off a book. It pulls you in like no other hook because it has a mix of foreshadowing, confusion, suspicion, excitement and more.

The author drops the reader at these line specifically. "Just remember the story we're about to tell you isn't complete yet. How it ends will depend on you." This is where the author drops the reader because it ends the topic without any resolution or answer to the many questions that the reader will be pondering during this time.

One example of an unknown word is brandishing. Based off of context clues I believe that it is getting out something in a splendid way. This is because the text refers to Carter and Sadie being afraid because of the magicians and they are only powerful if they get out their wands. So by indirect comparison, I believe that brandishing means getting something out from somewhere.

Another example is a "dust devil". I believe these mean a very frightening sandstorm that picks up everything in its way and destroys it in the process. This is because in the text, it refers to the action which the dust devils did, which was to destroy everything in its path and swallow it into the twisting sandstorm. So by example, I believe that a dust devil is a very intimidating sand storm.

At the beginning of the book, Carter and Sadie's dad accidentaly blew up the Rosetta Stone, causing the 5 Egyptian gods and goddesses (Osiris: god of the underworld, Horus: god of sky and kingship, Isis: goddess of healing and magic, Set: god of chaos, and Nephthys: goddess of the night) to emerge from their captivity. This causes Dr. Kane (their father) to join and connect with Osiris and they get sent back to the underworld.

This is a very important plot event because this is the event when Sadie and Carter was introduced to the gods and goddesses of Egypt and how their whole story came to be. This event sets up many different plot events throughout the entire book.

Also this means that they have found a new enemy that they have to avoid to fufill the task that they need to do to stop the world from ending.

Instead of killing the evil god, Set, they decide, by his secret name (the name that controls you when others have found it), that Set will not harm the Kanes or any magician in exchange for him being alive.

This is very important because the siblings have done so much to arrive to this goal, that they just let him go.

At the end of the book, right after they had released Set, they saw the looming shadow of Apophis (Official Mascot for Chaos) and that had disasterous effects in the minds of Carter and Sadie. It sparked a mood of danger and fear in the minds of everyone present at the time. This is because by seeing the shadow of Apophis, they had concluded that the snake was trying to free itself from the Ma'at. This would be disasterous and if it was free, it would cause a massive Chaos surplus, resulting in the end of the world as we know it.
