Phishing attacks are the most common type of attacks leveraging social engineering techniques. Attackers use emails, social media, instant messaging, and SMS to trick victims into providing sensitive information or visiting malicious URLs in an attempt to compromise their systems.
A watering hole attack consists of injecting malicious code into the public web pages of a site that the targets used to visit.
Pretexting indicates the practice of presenting oneself as someone else to obtain private information. Usually, attackers create a fake identity and use it to manipulate the receipt of information.

Every email program has spam filters.
Secure your computing devices. Install anti-virus software, firewalls, email filters, and keep these up-to-date.
How do cyber attackers leverage social engineering to go after a target?

A social engineering attack persuades the target to click on a link, open an attachment, install a program, or download a file. The link may redirect the target to a website that solicits personal information (that is then collected by the attacker) or has malware on it that then infects the target's computer.
Phone calls—often called “vishing,” for “voice fishing”—sometimes require the malicious actor to adopt a persona to persuade the target to give up critical information.
Targeted phishing is known as spear phishing, where the “bait” is directed at a specific individual or company. Customizing the attack increases the probability that the victim will fall for the spear-phishing campaign.
