The idea that students get to decide what’s offensive scares me… I get it - but that whole fear of saying anything comes into play … to make students feel safe you need to connect, to connect you can’t just teach metaphors and math equations and notes you have to be a human being… but it’s so stressful to talk to kids while in your head you are 3/4/5 steps ahead of your current sentence trying to analyze what’s coming out - Like you’re your own ten second delay … bc one wrong word could ruin you … so … do you play if safe? Say good morning here is some math work … but that’s not why you got into this … and so the cycle goes …

Acknowledge your role as a settler (if you are one). Do not center yourself. Acknowledge you do not know everything. Learn WITH students. Be extremely aware of your identities and how you sit in positions of power and privilege. Good intentions can be harmful. You need to actually do the work to decolonize your mind in order to create a place where ALL students, especially Indigenous students, feel emotionally and mentally safe. Create a set of classroom norms where you discuss what and when students feel most comfortable and calm. Strive to have those environmental conditions in place for these discussions. Have your non-negotiables be: physical, emotional, and mental safety. Create together what that looks like for your students. Be congnizant and conscientious of how white supremacy has shaped your life and how it operates in the education system. Be open with students about that. Be vulnerable with students. Ensure that you are not teaching anything "about us without us" - have voices from those marginalized groups be the center of the discussion. Use videos, podcasts, essays, books, TED talks, etc. But also reflect on the idea that they are not a spokesperson for everyone in that group. Just as white people are each allowed to be unique and represent only themselves, promote the idea that one person from a marginalized group also gets to be unique and have their own ideas and opinions.

It's important that we recognize the impact that colonialty has had on our society. As a white, cisgendered person I know that I have privilege and power in our society due to the pervasiveness of colonialism. I need to be aware and challenge this every day if I am to serve the needs of racialized and marginalized students. I try and stay open when people point out the harm I've caused. Listening with love and openness is important to ensure my own personal growth. I do not centre myself in the conversation. Creating conditions for inclusive spaces is essential. I always have good intentions, but this is not always enough. I need to unpack my biases and learn from different perspectives. I have always remained open to having courageous conversations with my students regarding issues of racism, classism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, Islamophobia, xenophobia, etc. I'm also beginning to think of the larger impact our education system has in perpetuating inequities and what my role is in upholding the status quo. How can I as a teacher/leader challenge systemic issues in our education system that harm racialized and marginalized students? How am I acknowledging my role in this and changing my actions/resisting practices that cause harm.
