Throughout this semester, the most beneficial learning for me has been the instruction we have received in classroom management. I have been taking elementary education classes for the last three semesters and, suprisingly, classroom management is not talked about often. Through the three books we have read on classroom management, class discussions, and getting to practice during the first music lesson that Ashlee and I taught to the class, I have learned many different strategies for managing a classroom and creating a safe environment where students are encouraged to make new friends and are not afraid to be themselves. I now know that in my future classroom I need to teach routines from day one and have the class redo the routines until they get them right. I also learned that I need to be consistent with following my classroom management plan from day one of the school year. In order to prevent misbehavior from occurring in the first place, I know that I must give thorough directions so my students know what is expected of them before participating in the lesson. These are small things I can do that will save instruction time and create a place where my students are able to learn.
SP

Over the course of this semester, I have also found the variety of classroom management techniques to be extremely helpful. Prior to this class, I hadn't really learned much about classroom management or the specific rationale behind it. I have found the various readings over the subject to be extremely informational, yet directly to the point. Although I have taught many lessons throughout my practicum experiences both last semester and this, this semester was my first opportunity to teach a music lesson. I was certainly a bit nervous going into it, but being able to practice it an execute it with my partner was very successful. I am very excited to have a second teaching opportunity, and am confident that I have the skills that will help me handle the discipline challenge that I am presented with during my teaching. The most important thing for me to remember when I am teaching my future students is to maintain consistency and clearly explain to them why we are doing certain things in the classroom.

If I could identify the most beneficial thing that I have learned this semester up to this point, it would have to be the various classroom management techniques. This is the first course that I have taken at KU where I have felt like I am learning about one of the most important aspects of a classroom: classroom management. In my other course I have learned valuable information for my future career, but I was always nervous about being in a classroom because I think that classroom management is one of the most challenging things to learn in teacher education. Some of the tips seem silly or that they would not work, but I have found that some of the most ridiculous feeling tips have been the most beneficial. For example, I remember trying out, "If you can hear me, tap your elbow" while saying it in a calm and collected voice, and in my head I'm thinking, "okay this is not going to work," and then all of the sudden all of the students started paying attention and became focused on what I was doing. My mind was blown. This was a group that I struggled with, especially with attention-getters, and it worked on the first try. I have implemented several other techniques and I have had great success with them. I still have a lot to learn, and have a lot of practice to master these techniques, but I am confident that will be able to continue to learn about classroom management techniques.

The most beneficial learning for me in MEMT 341 this far in the semester has been learning about the different classroom management methods. Ms. Potter has provided us with many of her own examples of classroom management and resources that give examples and how to enforce them. This far in the school of education, I have not learned this much about how to control a classroom. Something that I think is great is that not only is Ms. Potter telling us about these classroom management techniques, but she is also enforcing them in our classroom. There has not been a class when Ms. Potter hasn't said "when I say go" or "I am going to give you five seconds." This has helped give me an idea about how I can enforce my classroom management skills in my classroom. Every time Ms. Potter does this, it is a reminder that I would like to implicate all of these skills in my future classroom, in addition to everything we have been taught or have read about. After using all of these resources to understand classroom management better, I want to bring them all to my classroom including social contracts, prevention, rules and consequence, etc. I am very thankful for the classroom management skills I have learned from this course.

The most beneficial lessons I have learned in MEMT 341 have been how to incorporate movement into the classroom and the benefits of doing so. This class has taught me how any lesson can be revised so that it has a movement component to it. I think it can be hard not to feel overwhelmed when you think of all there is for a teacher to teacher his/her students. It can be easier to just want to stick to a basic curriculum plan to accomplish what you need to do and meet standards. But that is not fun for you or your students! I like that we have seen a multitude of short lessons with movement and even though they are music oriented, we are able to think of ways to adapt them to regular classroom where there might be less space, and how it could work for a reading or science lesson. I think as a tactile/kinectic learner myself, I was not taught in this way enough in my own school years. This class helps me to feel confident that I will be able to teach to meet the needs of a multitude of different learning styles because I will know how to allow for and encourage movement in the classroom in a constructive way. I also know that not only will my learners all benefit from being taught different ways, overall behaviors will be increased because the students are being allowed opportunities to have fun, be creative and learn and not just being stuck in a desk.

This is a hard question because I feel like almost everything I have learned I can take to my future classroom, but the MOST beneficial lessons would probably have to be the classroom management lessons. Each one of the classroom management points that Ms. Potter has explained, gives me a better understanding of how to have control in the classroom as well as having a good time while learning. I have been in classrooms before where there is no classroom management and it truly has given me second thoughts about becoming a teacher, but after reading, learning, and observing Ms. Potter I have incorporated management strategies in my daycare classroom at work. They have helped tremendously, and have given me great practice for when I have my own classroom. The only implication I have is incorporating them into strategies for children under 4. I have been trying to be creative with how I am running my daycare classroom in the afternoons, and some strategies have actually worked! Its great!

I have learned an immense amount since the start of this semester. This class has proved to be beneficial in many ways, not just in musical education. I am most appreciative for learning about classroom management. I have learned a handful of strategies that I can use right away in my student teaching, as well as strategies I can put in place once I have my own classroom. I have already used proximity when teaching and it works wonders. I loved learning about the line technique and how to practice it and model it in steps. I am really excited to implement these into my future class. These are just a few examples, but I have many more written down that I am saving for when I start teaching. Not only have I learned valuable material, I also have a great time while doing it. Ms. Potter has modeled all the techniques and activities she has given us, and shown us how fun we can make it for the students. I am excited to see where the end of the semester takes us as a class.

Honestly, I have learned a lot more in this class than I thought I would initially. While I think everything I have learned in this class will be useful in my future classroom, I think the most beneficial thing I have learned has been classroom management. Considering I am beginning student teaching in the fall, I think this information has come at the perfect time for me. Some examples of classroom management that I have learned has included being proactive about prevention of misbehavior and how to act quickly and firmly without creating a negative rapport with my students. A prevention aspect that I plan on using is the modeling method. This may seem repetitive but it leaves no room for students to misunderstand. When it comes to acting in the moment to stop misbehavior quickly, I have found that proximity has been very beneficial. I genuinely look forward to using the classroom management ideas I have learned in class in my student teaching and when I have my own classroom.

By far the most beneficial learning I have gained from this class is about classroom management. None of my other classes have really even touched on this topic, and it has been what I was most concerned about in having my own classroom, and wanted to learn about. I love the three books about classroom management, because they give amazing tips with different perspectives about what to do. Not to mention, Ms. Potter gives a lot of very helpful advice in class and models it for us in our lesson. This truly has been really helpful and eye opening for me, as I have started implementing some of the techniques I have learned through the text or in class in my preschool class I teach in currently. I am amazed at how effective they are! The children respond so well, and it makes me feel much more hopeful and excited for my future. In my future classroom I will implement a lot of the techniques I have learned, such as prevention, defining expectations and not lecturing students when they misbehave.

The most beneficial part of MEMT 341 has been classroom management and incorporating movement. Throughout this semester I have learned techniques that make classroom management easy. From day 1 Ms. Potter has incorporated such strong classroom management techniques, it is hard to notice that she is even doing it intentionally. I have learned that classroom management means consistency and stability. Keeping students on a schedule and making your expectations consistent makes the classroom environment so much more enjoyable and the overall attitudes/behavior is better. The planning of management and prevention saves way more valuable time than addressing issues as you go. When you are clear and consistent students know what to expect and they respect you. Ms. Potter CONSTANTLY incorporates movement in the classroom. These activities are not just beneficial for music, they work for every subject. I have written down the activities that I like best and saved them so I can use them in the future. Lastly, Ms. Potter demonstrates passion. I have always been passionate about teaching but watching a passionate teacher just makes becoming a teacher more exciting.

During my time spent in MEMT 341, the most beneficial learning for me has been classroom management strategies. In previous courses, I have found a lack of materials and strategies offered to implement classroom management in my future classroom. However, MEMT 341 offered three texts that help guide a first-year teacher to have a successful academic year. One of the biggest takeaways I have gathered is challenges in the classroom are often preventable given the teacher creates a classroom management plan that includes differentiation and a prevention plan. In my future classroom, I hope to create a classroom management plan and environment that my students want to come to everyday.

Up to this point in the semester, the most beneficial thing I have learned in MEMT 341 is a variety of techniques for classroom management. From Michael Linsin, to Curwin and Mendler, to Ms. Potter, I have collected a multitude of approaches for preventing misbehavior among the students in my class. Some of these methods include directly stating instructions and modeling how every procedure should be done. Creating routines within your class will prevent many misbehaviors from occurring among students. Another strategy is having rules and expectations for your class that you create together. If there is a mutual agreement and respect for the rules, the students will follow them. Lastly, Ms. Potter has taught us strategies for resolving issues such as coming in close proximity of the student, making direct eye contact, using positive body language, and using phrases such as, "I know you are going to make the right choice." All of these methods are going to be implemented in my future classroom.

We have learned many techniques that I think will be extremely helpful in my future classroom such as showing students exactly what you want them to do, using proximity if they are doing something that is distracting to other students, etc. These are some things that I have not learned as much about in other classes I have taken so far, and it is something that is very relevant to being a teacher. I also think the idea of not needing to ever raise your voice, which is a small piece of what we have learned in MEMT 341, but it is something I think has become very beneficial to me in my future teaching and even now working at the Boys and Girls Club, I have realized that it is very true.

Curwin and Mendler along with Linsin have brought up many aspects of classroom management that I would have never thought of on my own. I also really appreciate how you model behaviors for us because is is helpful not only to hear about techniques that we can do but being able to see it helps drastically. I also have thought learning about enactive, iconic, and symbolic learning has been important. These teaching techniques helps with classroom management because if a teacher is trying to teach material to first graders by using a symbolic learning activity, the class will be more stressful because the students may not understand the concept being taught. I have already begun to use some of the classroom management techniques in the early childhood center that I work out. I plan to use many of the classroom management techniques we have learned especially saying, "when I say go" or "in a minute" before giving directions.

I have seen the most opportunity for application in our learning about classroom management; specifically in terms of giving clear instructions before executing activities. Something I have struggled with in teaching settings, and have seen others struggle with, is allowing children to begin activities before providing specific details. This causes various levels of chaos since there is a lack of understanding on the students' part and the teacher is frantically trying to convey sufficient instructions. So, it has been extremely helpful for me to see examples of good classroom management in our readings and in Ms. Potter's instruction. I've been able to try applying those techniques and I will certainly continue to use them in my future classroom.

But the tactics that you have taught me like verbal prevention will go along way in my future classroom because it can prevent discipline problems before they even happen. I appreciate the time that Miss Potter has put into teaching preventative strategies and disciplinary strategies to use in our classrooms. One thing that I found super helpful was the classroom management speed dating. I enjoyed hearing all of the different scenarios that we might face as teachers and work through how to manage the different situations. These types of activities are very helpful for me because it gives me real examples of what has happened so I can prepare myself for the unexpected.

Along with classroom management, I think it has been helpful when, after we complete a music activity, we have a class discussion about ways to alter the lesson in order to incorporate it into a general education classroom.

I believe that the most beneficial learning so far for me in this class has been the incorporation of enactiv or physical movement in the classroom setting. From this class, I am now a strong believer in why teachers should have a good amount of movement in their classrooms due to retaining and remembering information and creating a positive environment in the classroom. I have noticed time and time again that through enativ learning in the classroom, I enjoy the class more, I take in more of the information being taught because of the more memorable experiences through moving, and that movement in the classroom seems to make every student happy.

The most beneficial think I have learned in this class is different ways of classroom management. Just this morning I was a para sub in a kindergarten music classroom and it was pure chaos and I was thinking of all the ways I would step in to control the classroom if I was the teacher in charge. This situation helps me have confidence that I am growing more and more ready to have a classroom of my own, and they will be under control (for the most part). I want to imply all forms of management we have learned, but the one I see myself doing most often is demonstrating my expectations for I ask the students to do it.

The most beneficial thing that I have taken away from this class so far is classroom management techniques. We have talked so much about the what ifs in a classroom and what we can do to prevent things from happening. The preventative strategies we have learned have also proven to be helpful and allow for the students to trust us and resolve the problem quickly and painlessly. I have also enjoyed learning about enactive learning. There are always ways for us to include exercise and movement into our classroom which I think is very important.
