Holden lies to Mrs. Cavendish about his name, occupation, and even her son all while using a fake voice. Using Rudolf Schmidt, Holden takes on a new and self-titled "mature" persona while talking to an older woman, an older woman whom he calls attractive. This useless lying and playing around is an irrefutable example of how Holden's immaturity affects his actions. Afraid to be alone once again, he tries to go for drinks with Mrs. Cavendish near the end of their encounter. Holden hides behind a veil of a mature and complex character, while inside he is an innocent child wanting to play around and have a good time.

The taxi driver shows no interest in Holden's antics, yet he persistently pesters him about ducks migrating due to a frozen lake. Holden's unnecessary pestering resembles that of a child's behavior. His adolescent attitude shines through when reflecting on the ducks in Central Park. Holden reminisces about ducks and on multiple occasions, ponders about where they go when the lake freezes over. This connects to Holden's adolescent nature. When he asks people about the ducks, he's asking what happens to him when- or if- he grows up. Holden's sort of morbid curiosity is shown through the ducks of Central Park. His use of unintentional metaphors illustrates his youthful mind coping with the idea of aging.

Holden encounters a group of three young ladies in a hotel's "Lavender Room". According to his account, these ladies were around thirty, and they all wore the most atrocious hats, of course, there was only one he had his eye on. Holden had a fascination with Bernice, so he made some advances. His use of "the eye", what he believed was a suave voice and numerous failed attempts at social cues led the girls to laugh at him. Holden was very ticked off by this, even though he knew they were drinking and older, but the alienation hurt him. This demonstrates his adolescent behavior, as he attempts to mask his youth to fit in and act adult. Through this interaction, we also get a closer view of Holden's sexuality. He expresses his enjoyment of Bernice's dancing while also hammering the fact that she was not very great at anything but dancing. Holden's use of cursing and slander to these women further proves that he is struggling socially and sexually. His youth ties into his sexual experiences, as he hasn't matured enough to experience certain things. He has small outbursts that reveal his childlike and novice mind. Holden has his heart set on Bernice, making good conversation with her, and ultimately cannot court her. Although he does nothing to harm these girls, it is irrefutable that he isn't fond of them even after getting to know them. He continues to toy with them and diss them in his mind. This surely makes him feel better about his failed attempts at courtship.

Holden's mind provides less and less security over time. With this decline in an escape that he finds to be so essential, he will have a meltdown. With this outburst, there will be hospitalization or containment of some sort. Holden will be confined to a place where he can heal and sort out his traumatic past.

Holden's desire to be fake or different from what he is stems from childhood trauma. Through Allie's death, Holden is seen to be holding onto his pain and carrying it with him, developing mental illness. He is shown taking on new personas to meet women, this connects to his red hunting hat. Holden uses his hat to personify these characters who are his attempts at being mature and charismatic. By turning the red hat around, a new version of Holden is activated. With these needless theatrics, we perceive how he feels the need to become somebody else to stop being lonely. Holden's performances demonstrate his inability to grasp the concept that he can be his true self without enduring loneliness.

Holden thinks of younger people, more specifically his siblings, as amazing. On a day-to-day basis, it is not common for an older sibling to express this amount of fondness for a younger sibling. The reason Holden appreciates his younger siblings so much is because of his attachment to adolescence. He loves and cares for his younger sister, as expressed through little details. Notice how Holden remembers minor details about people he likes, take Jane for example. His sister Pheobe is described as one of the smartest kids and a film fanatic. When Holden first brings her up, he is immediately swept away into a plethora of thoughts encapturing his feelings for her. He only looks upon her without any fault, which furthers the point of his clutch of youthfulness, as he does the same for his other sibling.
