Welcome to my padlet. My name is Tyrell Nina. I am a student in the University of the West Indies and currently studying a course called Caribbean Civilization. This course is a very interesting one and has so many interesting topics to ponder on. However the idea of Caribbean Identity always intrigued me. I always wondered if this 'identity' actually exists and especially since I'm in a Caribbean 'melting pot' in UWI. To me, the idea of a Caribbean Identity was always so farfetched as the cultures are so different. However Caribbean Civilization has opened my eyes and this will be shown in my presentation.

As an avid fan of sports, I have always seen a divide among the Caribbean Nations, especially in the sport of cricket. The 'team' West Indies always has its controversies with regards to the 'island vs island' mentality. This has always proven a great obstacle to our success. It felt as though whenever we take a step forward, we take two steps back. The video below shows a game between Barbados vs Trinidad and Tobago in a regional t20 competition. This match occurred one year after the West indies captured the t20 World Cup in Sri Lanka in 2012. Observe how former teammates become bitter enemies.

The Barbados player Tino Best was verbally assaulting the batsmen and the run out by Dwayne Smith was in poor taste with regard to Sportmanship and the spirit of the game.

What is a diaspora? A diaspora is the dispersion or spread of any people from their original homeland. It's basically all the Caribbean people living in foreign lands together. It is often seen when people go abroad to study or live they find their first friends as those from the Caribbean, not necessarily from the same country but from the same region.

It's no secret that sport and music is a major influence on Caribbean people. As shown before it can divide us with its competitive nature but most of the time it brings us together. Prime examples are the West indies cricket team, the Trinidad and Jamaican Football teams and the various olympic athletes. Earlier this year the West Indies made history by winning the t20 world cup and the Caribbean as a whole was brought together as one to celebrate this victory. This also occurred in this year's Olympic Games where the Caribbean was backing their own nation's athletes yes but they were also supporting the Caribbean athletes in general. Athletes like Keshorn Walcott, Usain Bolt, Kirani James and many more aren't just national heroes, they are regional superstars. The final example of Sport leading to a Caribbean Identity was during the FIFA World Cup in 2014 when Costa Rica was performing on an amazing level and the entire Caribbean got behind them to support and push them to get further. Art was also mentioned as we always say #supportlocal and want to see the local and regional artistes succeed. Perfect example is Tessanne Chin when she competed in the voice and Anya Ayoung Chee when she competed in Project Runway where the entire Caribbean Supported them.

It is no secret that Caribbean people are know as hospitable and friendly. This is due to our culture of being this way. The regular norms of packing extra food for a friend in school/work, having your family treat friends like blood and genuinely being nice to people have led to our hospitable and friendly culture. This allows us to treat others from the Caribbean with the same hospitality as we are accustomed to at home and this is what makes the diaspora such a key factor in making this Caribbean Identity a reality.

The Caribbean is a major melting pot of cultures. We as nations have our own differences, but these differences is what makes us so similar. Our ability to accept the differences and be together to show CARIBBEAN pride is what keeps the idea of a Caribbean identity alive. I subconsciously catch myself saying "I'm a proud Trinidadian" but after this Caribbean Civilization course, I am definitely a proud Caribbean civilian.
