The animosity between North Korea and US has always complicated dealings between the two..

Since the formation of the country since the end of World War I and the Korean War there has hostility between the two countries. With the United States backing the southern half of Korea and providing support when need, North Korea leaning more so as an isolationist country has been left behind in many aspects.

Technology, agriculture, transportation are all things that North Korea have allowed to settle for below average compared to the rest of the world. The only thing that North Korea has that continues to be the reasoning behind its constant vigilance are its nuclear weapons. The United States and others of same concern are trying to get them to dismantle these weapons to help out.

North Korea importance is due its unwillingness to discuss issues with any outside sources...

Specifically its government does not concern itself with wanting to change the regime that is in place, mainly being communist by nature. Also considering its placement geographically it sits in between many other bigger countries such as Russia, and China. In truth North Korea's importance lays more so with its nuclear weapons, and the need to feel recognized by the world at large.

Due to the country strictly keeping its nuclear program simply for validation puts the rest of the world at risk with no one really knowing weather or not they will be used in a future conflict or not.

There have been attempts to negotiate with North Korea trying to find common ground and have a discussion on its nuclear weapons. At its best the United States and North Korea would help establish agreements that would help both parties involved, one of these agreement would be the Framework program of 1194 that aimed at " political and economic relation would be normalized, and both countries would work toward a nuclear weapons resolution"

However these arrangements would be disparage after the bush administration would come into power. choosing to cut off ties with the DPRK in favor of other interest. While the U.S may back-peddle on agreement depending on who is in charge at the time, North Korea seems to only be opened to discussion when it benefits them only.

A continuing feeling of frustration for the U.S. is the unwillingness of the North Korea to remove their nuclear weapons from operation, this has been an issue that has span many years ever since the end of the Korean War. With the United States military presence in South Korea, there is always a sense of the ongoing hostilities that are felt but never acted upon.

North Korea does not have the military strength to fight the United States and South Korea at the same time, so they in the end they would resort to using their nuclear weapons instead which would have dire consequence on all those in the surrounding area. In the end it could be a lose lose type of situation.

The only problem is that neither side wishes to lose the power that they have established, weather it be the North with their lineage of rulers in place, or the south with its more democratic ties comparable to the US there are a multitude of problems already preventing the chance of peace. The United States has yet to make any real change in their proceedings with North Korea, and are simply biding their time to see if the country will be willing at some point in time to negotiate a treaty of peace. But with the changing of administration every few years, agendas change and we may see a different approach in the coming years to dealing with North Korea
