Collaboration A Parent: Double the fun

I had asked a parent of one of the students I had long termed sub for our survey questions and below are her thoughts as they pertain to collaboration and co-teaching.
She defined co-teaching as two teachers that work together to teach a lesson. Some days teaching the lesson together, other days teaching it apart (each taking a different section). She believed that the teachers have to get along in order to co teach and that this is a skill that is necessary for their lessons to blend. She felt teachers with different styles of teaching can be a benefit because they could each reach a different portion of students. When she was describing co-teaching, to me she was also hitting on the idea of collaboration since both teachers had to pick sections of the lessons to teach and they have to blend. That to me was collaboration. This particular class has two science teachers that teach differently , but both have a very loud very visual personality that captures students attention.

Teachers Collaborating: Each holds a piece of the puzzle

A 2nd grade public school teacher

When I surveyed this teacher, she had picked collaboration as the focus of how she would answer the questions. Collaboration she stated,” is when you work together as a team towards the same goal, but in different ways”. Each teacher holds a different piece of the puzzle. She used the word synergize and stated that each person on the team should contribute in some way to the lessons that are being planned. The concepts I derived from this interview is that this teacher believed that each of her co-teachers should help to add to the lesson so that the lesson reflected a part of each of their styles. That if you walked into any of their rooms the same content would be being taught in a similar or the same way. I felt that finding time to plan the lessons well was a burden since most of their time is allocated to teaching or other mandated activities.

My Future Principle: Seeking Knowledge from people all over

When presented with the survey she saw collaboration as a group of teachers that worked together to enhance students learning experiences with trying different avenues for students to aquire knowledge. She said this can come from a group of teachers all working in the same grade or from teachers at different grade levels, trying to help students achieve their max potential. She said communication is the is the main condition that needs to occur between teachers. She said as a principle you want to see teachers collaborationg and seeking answers or help from outside their room. That teachers all over should be collaborating with each other always seeking new ideas and ways of doing thing. She saw twitter as a great resourve that teachers are always posting different idea and ways of doing things. Nothing should be off limits.

Collaboration and Co-teaching:

I do think that both ideas are one in the same. Teachers who teach in a school with multiple grades to me all co-teach. They Collaborate with their lessons , but each teach a section of students, which to me is co-teaching. I think in order for tecahers to become stronger we need to seek out different avenues of knowledge and they need to possess strong communication skills .
