Past work experience

Previously I have taken part in a work experience scheme by the school and I had to find my own placement this was relevent to what I want to do in the future. My placement was with Kim Cannon Studio where I worked alongside Kim Cannon herself and my role was to assist every job which was required. The business was a dressmakers and Kim specialised in corsetry. The tasks I had to undertake was using an industrial machine, stitching garments and pieces together, constructing children's jackets, creating stockings,window dressing, beading, crystallizing suits and wedding motifs. there was many tasks I had to undertake and these were roles of a dressmaker/ seamstress. Kim's work mainly consisted of making custom made garments which were made to order and repairing or modifying a garment. I feel that this placement had helped me a great amount because, before this I was stuck between photography and dressmaking as a career, by working here I felt that this career was right and that I wanted to study fashion design.This also gave me a lot more skills to note on my CV for when I look for future work placements.

I have also done voluntary work at my local library for the summer reading challenge, I found this really enjoyable as I love to help others, I also assisted children with reading and recording their progress. I feel this is useful to me as I think it is important to be able to assist others for example, in my career I will need to assist all my customers with care.

I have done voluntary work at several care homes over Christmas and I do this for personal reasons but also to help out in my local community, I feel that it is important to care for the elderly in the community, this also built up my communicating and organisation skills when I had to follow a rota and individually assist an elderly patient in the care home

Currently i am working in a hair and beauty salon. This isn't relevant to what i want to do in the future. however I have learnt a lot of new skills which can add to my CV such as customer care, using the till, controlling stock, mixing colour, applying colour, applying tint, washing hair, massaging, colour correction theory, cleaning, importance of health and safety, what to do if there is a fire, sunbed care, hospitality and first aid.

I enjoy my job and see it as away of providing for my student expenses, my job has taught me to deal with a lot of experiences I wouldn't expect, thankfully I am a qualified first aider and was able to help several people,Ii feel that my job does link to fashion in a way because I have to follow the latest trends and styles of hair which is used within fashion.

Previously I have worked in a take-away and this involved answering calls and repeating orders to give to the chef and built up my communicating skills, I feel that this is helpful towards my career in the fashion industry as I will need good communication skills.

I have researched into this because i was interested to find out that this tailor carries out the same couture techniques as Savile row. For me this is the industry I want to work up towards, I feel that this would be really beneficial to me and boost my CV into finding connections with the bespoke tailoring industry in London by gaining the skill and craftsmanship from Aprile-Smith. This business is local to home and I could get the bus from Rayleigh station to Leigh-on-Sea. This would be within the cost of my monthly bus pass which allows me to travel on any bus route at any time. This normally costs me £44 or for a singular fare for the day it would cost £3.70. Skills required are some for of background in the fashion industry such as a Diploma and basic pattern cutting skills and garment construction.

This caught my interest because this is what I aim to do in the near future and aspire to be.
This would be benifitial to me because I feel I could learn and expand on the skills needed for university and for my career. Shelia Grace is a bespoke dressmaker specialising in haute couture. Making custom made wedding and prom dresses. This would not cost me as I could walk from my home to the business as its only a walks length away. Skills required are basic pattern and garment construction skills and a good attitude towards fashion design.
