Teach beyond the basic definition and engage the students by making connections to the real world. These are strategies that I tend to use already.

This includes using the "STAR" method, which is Select, Teach, Activate, Revisit. This also includes word walls that students can reference. There are 6 steps; Explain, Restate, Show, Discuss, Refine and reflect, and Application. Vocabulary instruction is essential to build foundational knowledge in all academic subjects. Having an effective way to teach vocabulary can increase students ability to comprehend what they are learning and how they can apply their new knowledge. In my classroom I use vocabulary cards that have images and are broken down into syllables. The consonants are written in black and the vowels are in red. This not only build vocabulary, but incorporates phonemic awareness. My students are 4-5 years old.

Vocabulary should be given in an Integrated ELD form, where terminology of other subjects is integrated into regular readings. I love that Kate Kinsella emphasizes that academic vocabulary should be explicitly taught and practiced within meaningful content-area instruction, allowing English Learners to develop language skills in context through integrated ELD. In my Kindergarten class, I use Dr. Kinsella’s approach by introducing key vocabulary from subjects like math or science during read-alouds and hands-on lessons, giving my students repeated, opportunities to hear, say, and use the words in context. - Jill Williams
