This paper’s subject focuses on the idea of agency, defined as the vision of the individual as an entity capable of autonomy, choice, and control over oneself. The author applies the concept of agency to the struggles of women in the Muslim world seeking to attain agency within hierarchical, male-dominated religious and political organizations. The author’s thesis is that political upheavals in Egypt, such as the Egyptian revolution of 2011, created new opportunities for women in the country, but not within a specific organization that the author focused on, the Muslim Brotherhood.
