What untitled story comes before and after this one? Are either or both of them connected to your story? In what ways?
The untitled story after speaks of Figueroa going to prison and potentially being executed for being in some sort of relationship with a 17 year old white female. While the story before speaks of a con artist posing as a priest who uses religion for gain. I feel both untitled stories aren’t connected to my story but a larger story of deception and racism. There’s deception in the untitled story by the priest and the portrait people and racism (I assume) that lead Figueroa to prison for being with a white girl.

What are some metaphors in this story? This can be metaphors in the structure, specific symbols, repeated imagery, use of water, earth, fire. When you share the metaphors or symbols in this story, please copy the passages onto your poster as quotes.
I see the metaphor of light and images here. Don Mateo and his partner are so enthralled by the thought of an image, something that’s not really there. They know that their Chuy isn’t actually present or will physically be more present, but to have someone fix a portrait that resembles real physical presence is cool.
“But you take good care of that picture for us because it’s the only one we have of our son grown up.”(pg 131)

That’s what the portrait people had me feeling.

How does it fit into what you see as the important ideas, questions or themes of the book? (i.e. what is being pieced together?)

I think number 4. helps me piece together the story in a way that makes triumph an output. And struggle as a journey, in this case the triumph wasn’t the portrait that Don Mateo got, but the fact he faced one of the men who took something valuable from him.

An image that highlights the author’s use of imagery/symbols/metaphors - this should be a picture that is an image suggested by the author’s written metaphor or imagery

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/f5/05/24/f50524ee5f161f437400aaf215c9e12f.jpg
This image is perfect because it shows how our imagination/lives can seem dull without anything of color in them. It’s like Don Mateo just wanting to see the vibrant colors of his Chuy. From that I assume that there must be something dull or blank that the narrator as well is trying to fill in, why else should you give $30 to a stranger. That’s a lot of today still, sheesh.
