He wanted to bring Mala since he did not want Mala to experience the same fate as many other Jews. Edek had smuggled a Nazi uniform that he would use to disguise himself as, and Mala would disguise as a male prisoner. Edek was disguised as the soldier and he ushered Mala outside of the camp as a supervisor would a prisoner. Later that evening at role call, sirens rang out in the women and men’s camp; prisoners had escaped. On the 6th of July, they had been captured after running into a border patrol, in which they were quickly returned to Auschwitz and kept in a bunker and interrogated brutally. 

Their fate had been planned as both to be hung. They both promised to never let their executioner take them alive.

Unfortunately this failed, and he was promptly hung by the executioner. Mala was yet to be killed. As she was brought to the gallow, she slit her wrist with a blade to let herself bleed out. Despite various attempts by soldiers, they were unable to get the blade out of her hand. She was put on a handcart and taken to the Crematorium. Many survivors pay respect to Mala still to this day, and her home in Belgium has been given a plaque where her family and herself lived.
