While I was in elementary school, I became friends with a student from Guatemala. As far as I can remember, this was one of my first (personal) encounters with someone of a different culture. Many of the students in our class, including myself, were amazed that she could speak another language. She performed well in class, as she spoke English and Spanish fluently. She would also tell us stories about how her home/family life was different than ours. We continued to be friends throughout elementary until she moved schools.

This year, my family took us on vacation to Cancun, Mexico. We had many new encounters and experiences as this was my first time traveling outside the US. Upon landing and catching a taxi to the resort, we quickly realized that most taxi drivers spoke little to no English. It was difficult just trying to tell them what resort or place you needed to get to. Simple tasks such as ordering food or speaking to someone at a grocery store was often difficult. This was my first time really experiencing cultural differences and language barriers.

In high school, I can distinctly remember a new student coming into our History/Government class on a random school day. He was of Hispanic background and could not speak any English. Our teacher had no idea how to respond as he did not know Spanish. It was all that the teacher could do to get his name. I remember sitting there thinking about how the school would provide accommodations for the student or even be able to communicate with him. The Spanish teacher stepped in to act as a translator for him. This was one of the first experiences where I truly felt bad because the school could not do much for the student which was unfair to him.

As a sub, I have encountered students in the classroom that are non-English speaking. From those experiences, you learn how to adapt and communicate in some way to those students, but it can still be difficult in assisting them in their learning or their work. Currently, I feel that we seem to be advancing in society (regarding diversity), but there is certainly more that could be done or changed in order to further the advancement.
