Use of statistics - Ms. Palin Stanzas 2 and 5, lines 7 and 16 respectively, the poet uses statistics to demonstrate the enormity of the issue of gun violence. She states that 17 (line 7) children lost their lives in the Sandy Hook school shooting and 27 (line 16) lost their lives in the devastating Parkland High School shooting in Florida. Both of these school shootings took the lives of innocent children who were fostering their education and calls to action the need for gun control and services to those who are in need. The use of statistics bolsters the factual side of a contentious issue and shows that the need for gun control is ever present and not just a fleeting idea. Esquivel use of statistics impacts the audience by shocking them into the understanding the numbers don't lie, guns kill and there is a need for there to be action when it comes to gun control reform.

Sofia's paragraph 1- "Absolution to the Acts of Gun Violence" by Ace of Black Hearts:

After annalizing this poem I have realized that one of the literary devices that is the most present in these lines of poetry is rhyme. Throughout this poem, this device is used to create a rhythm and give the poem a smoother flow. For instance, the last word of line 1 and in line 2 rhyme with each other and so does the last word of line 3, line 4 and line 5. By introducing rhymes right at the start of the poem, Ace of Black Hearts (the author) manages to establish a rhythm from the very begging and make the poem sound more appealing to the audience. Another example of rhyme can be found inline 27 where the author wrote “ No hesitation, or procrastination”.This sentence has been written at the end of the poem and my guess would be that Ace of Black Hearts (the author) did this to finish the poem exactly as he started it. By doing this, she is creating a sense of closure to the poem in a pleasant but also powerful way.

Stanzas 5 and 8, lines 15 and 22, the poet uses metaphors to demonstrate the effect of gun violence on her and others. On line 15, stanza 5, Esquivel states, “Our hearts were broken that day,” then on line 22, stanza 8, she states, “For now I’ll just lock down my heart.” Both of these metaphors are relatively similar as they both refer to a broken heart, a broken heart, or “heartbreak” is a metaphor that refers to extreme emotional pain since they are very upset. In the context of this poem, she and others are very upset because of school shootings and gun violence. Also, where she says, “For now I’ll just lock down my heart,” she is saying that she doesn’t want to experience or relive the pain and trauma school shootings and gun violence have caused her. The use of metaphors emphasizes the poet’s point to stop gun violence and the need for gun control because it shows the audience the emotional impact on the people part of this issue, and this will make the audience feel empathetic towards them. Therefore, by showing the audience how people have been affected by gun violence, they will see the need to take action to stop gun violence.

Use of Rhythm - Fiona Hinrichsen

Throughout the poem, Ace of Black Hearts uses rhyming in different ways to unify the poem and make all the different ideas fit together. At the start of the piece of poetry, the ending word of each line rhyme. For example, line 1 and 2 rhyme, “rising” and “dying” since they have the same end sound. Then lines 3, 4, and 5 rhyme as well, “unclear,” “fear” and “disappear” since they also have the same end sound. By using rhyming at the end of each line, it makes the phrases more memorable for the audience as they are is a pattern but also because it is catchy. Also, on lines 9, 15, 22, and 27, the poet uses and assonance on each line. For example, line 15 uses both assonance and consonance. “So raw, so resolved” is consonance, and “so resolved, this problem has to be solved” is assonance. Using both consonance and assonance creates musical feel when it is used in poetry. This also helps create a rhythm in the piece of poetry, making the piece of poetry more enjoyable to read for the audience.

Sofia's paragraph 2- "Generation Lockdown" by Violeta Esquivel:

After annalizing this poem I have realized that apart from using anecdotes since Violeta Esquivel is telling us a story of her personal life, one of the literary devices that Violeta Esquivel has used the most present in this poem are similies. Violeta Esquivel (the author) has used this throughout her poem to create spark the reader’s imagination while still getting the information across. For instance, in line 12 she “That week parents all over America was reminded that life is a short as a moth's wing”. While it is obvious that this isn’t literally true, by doing this, Violeta Esquivel’s writing becomes more interesting and the audience is able to create an image in their heads. Another example of a simile in Violeta Esquivel’s poem is when she says “and fear as commonplace as dishes in the sink” in line 13. Once again, this sentence is not intended to be taken literally, it is just there to help the audience visualize the message of the poem and feel the need to change.

One litery devices that Violeta used is simile this is to create imgagery in the reader's mind. In stanza 11 she used "that looked like a jail cell door" this creates imagery because the author is deescribing the looks of a prsion like a "jail cell door" and so the reader can imagine what the school gate looks like.

The poem “Generation Lockdown” by Violeta Esquivel talks about the social change issue of school shooting in Los Angeles. She uses various literary devices such as similes and euphemisms to emphasis the need for change. Similies are used in poems to help readers understand what the poets are trying to communicate by comparing two different things. Esquivel uses similies on the first line of stanza 3 (line 12) when saying “...life is as short as a moth’s wing”. The poet compares the timeline of life to a moth’s wing, referring to the fact that life is short. What this does is it makes the readers understand what the author is saying. Another example of a simile being used in this poem is in the last line of the third stanza (line 13) when saying: “...fear as commonplace as dishes in the sink”. Saying this makes the readers understand their fear and how often it is felt since dishes always go to the sink after being used. Finalizing the effect of the use of similies, it emphasises the importance of change of school shooting and helps the readers understand the message the author is trying to deliver. The use of euphemism replaces harsh and negative words with softer and sometimes more dramatic words. It can also make the readers feel more emotional through the use of a more intense tone. Violeta Esquivel uses euphemism in the second stanza on the second line: “...27 lives were taken”. What this does it makes the readers feel more intense because of the dramatic tone and makes them realize, again, the need for a change of this social change issue.

The poem “Absolution to the Acts of Gun Violence" by Ace of Black Hearts talks about social change issue of Gun violence. She uses a few literary devices such as rhyme and rethorical questions. The use of rhyme allows the readers to have a better experience, differing the poem from other poems by making it more interesting. It repeats patterns and gives the poem rhythm, making the readers more engaged in the poem. The poet uses rhyme in many areas, one example is shown in line 1 and 2 when saying: “The count is still rising, our children are dying.” This engages the readers to keep reading with the rhythms and the “hook”. Another example is shown in line 3 to 4: “Motives unclear, its the phone call we all fear”. To finalize the effect of us of rhyme, it helps the readers stay engaged throughout the poem while explaining the need for a change of gun violence.

“Generation Lockdown” by Violeta Esquivel is a poem that talks about school shootings and the impacts it has on schoolchildren. Esquivel uses a range of literary devices such as euphemism and metaphors to highlight the brutality of it. A euphemism is a phrase that replaces vulgar and offensive wording with much more neutral and subtle words. Esquivel’s use of euphemism can be seen in the second stanza “That day 27 young lives were taken”. It stands out because of the subtle impact that it creates on the audience. Instead of putting it in a poetic way, Esquivel says it bluntly to get the point across and to make the reader realize that school shootings are indeed a social change that we need to pay more attention to.

The poem “Absolution to the Acts of Gun Violence” by Ace of Black Hearts is a poem that talks about the darker side of gun violence and the impacts it has on the public. Two of the main literary devices that the author uses are rhyme and rhetorical questions. In almost every poem, a rhyming scheme is used. Rhymes are used to creating a better flow in the poem and more memorable lines. “Absolution to the Acts of Gun Violence” does not have a consistent rhyming scheme, rather, the most impactful parts do. An example of this is in the first two lines “The count is still rising. Our children are still dying.” Right away, we are introduced to the action and the emphasis on how the children are being affected. Even if the reader isn’t a parent, they understand how heartbreaking it is to see children being affected by violence. At the end of the poem, the twenty-seventh line “No hesitation, or procrastination.” empowers the readers and encourages them to take action and fight back against gun violence. Even though both rhymes are in two different places, they are able to send strong messages to the reader.
