Find an example of the effective use of diction. A writer creates certain type of sentences and chooses vocabulary for a specific purpose, either to create suspense or an image in the reader's mind. Does King use repetition to paint a picture in your mind? Short sentence to create suspense? What is the significance of the passage you chose?

My example is:
"She backed away, her face a round white blur, her mouth an opening black O of terror, and she wasn't Norma, Norma was dead, she had been dead for ten years, and it didn't matter because she was going to scream and he swung the hammer to stop the scream, to kill the scream, and as he swung the hammer the spill of flowers fell out of his hand, the spill spilled and broke open, spilling red, white, and yellow tea roses beside the dented trash cans where cats made alien love in the dark, screaming in love, screaming, screaming. Page: 459

Explanation:
I chose this quote because it is appealing to the topic of diction. It is descriptive of the atmosphere and mood King creates in this particular short story. From the mood of happiness and the season of spring to the mood of numbness and the season of winter where it is dark, cold and heartless.

Significance:
A strong contrast exists then between the flowers (a symbol of love) and the brutality of "love" murdering Norma with a hammer. Likewise, the new life spring brings is juxtaposed against the harsh and bitter winter, mirroring the contrast between love and murder.

Diction Pg.459

Quote: “He swung the hammer and she didn’t scream, but she might scream because she wasn’t Norma, none of them were Norma, and he swung the hammer, swung the hammer, swung the hammer.” (459)

Explanation: This quote displays the literary device diction. The repetition of the word ‘scream” and “swung” gives us image of intensity and fear. Our minds can picture the hammer being swung after the women

Significance: Psycho analysis – in this quote the protagonist kills Norma. The results in his ID taking over his mind. This ID is getting the satisfaction it wants from killing this young women who he believes is Norma

This quote also develops the literary device pathetic fallacy because after he kills the young women, the story explains that the lane is fully dark (pg. 460)resulting in something bad happening for example his “dark side” comes out.
