The snow has fallen making it eerily quiet. You need to escape the house, but know there is someone lurking about. And to make matters worse, the person you can't locate has demonic intentions. This is how the author builds tension toward the most intense turning point of the book - the climax - nearing the end of the novel. Besides the setting, the description of Sarah adds to the ominous mood. The author describes Sarah's eyes as "cold as snow" and then later "just like a ghost, snow-white skin glowing." We see the author is using diction, repetition, and similes to describe this character. If eyes are the window to the soul, then the simile of cold eyes reveal a deep seated evil in Sarah. Additionally, the author uses "snow" twice. It's interesting that snow is falling all around outside, while she uses "snow" to describe Sarah. This indicates Sarah is all around - moving stealthily as a "ghost." The diction of "ghost" also implies death and danger. We can see this combined with the setting, builds a mood akin to a horror film. The descriptions build like legos - stacking upon each other - until there is only one option. The legos fall.
