College and career ready-teaching them how to be engaged in critical thinking and inquiry in all situations, no matter how mundane. Students need to be taught how to set and achieve personal and academic goals. They must be taught their "why" and how to know who they are to find happiness and success in life.
Globally competitive means that teachers teach content and learning strategies that students actively practice that are in line with what are considered successful practices globally. For example, the expectation by all employers anywhere in the world right now is that employees are able to work together on teams to ensure the organization's goals are met - regardless of personal issues with teammates.
College and career ready means that students are prepared for any college or training program and are life long learners that can acquire skills and apply them as needed.

So they are wondering what is going on in Japan, India, etc. Teachers must remember that they too are lifelong learners and we must be willing to change and update the way we do things. If we are discouraged we don't shut down; instead, we go back to the drawing board and figure out what we can do so that our students can compete. We speak life into our students and encourage them to do things that they never thought possible.
