I found that in the book, the idea of race and major unavoidable tradgeies ties together. In this book, the whole idea of race was portayed through Hurricane Katrina and it brought to light the many racial issues that african Americans face today. It did a great job of portraying the issue of race and the aftermath of Katrina for particulally poor African American families . It talks about an issue that many believe does not exsist in the 21st century and this book really does a good job of showing that it still infact exsist

In this book I noticed that there was a very one way street portrayal of African American men in. They are portrayed as selfish, unknowing and almost carefree about alot of things. I feel that it would have been benificial to the story if Ward had taken a differnt turn while writing her male characters into the story. For example, Manny, he is a fantastic example of the way Ward portray her male chatacters. She wrote the Manny as a teenager, and the story she placed in front of him( the conveving of his child) could have been handled differently, seeing as how he reacted by calling Esch many derogatory names.

While reading the book, I noticed that the book did a good job of showing the problems in todays society that many people don't beilive still exist, racism. Many people still think today that segregation and racism towards someone of African American decent ended with The civil Rights movement in the 1960's. That is far from the truth, though. In many cases, blck students are still desriminated against in places such as schools, especially in the south. Many Americans today are blind to the fact that racism still goes on today and are unaware of the damage it causes.
