They are portrayed as selfish, unknowing and almost carefree about alot of things. I feel that it would have been benificial to the story if Ward had taken a differnt turn while writing her male characters into the story. For example, Manny, he is a fantastic example of the way Ward portray her male chatacters. Many people still think today that segregation and racism towards someone  of African American decent ended with The civil Rights movement in the 1960's. That is far from the truth, though. In many cases, blck students are still desriminated against in places such as schools, especially in the south.
