Gloria Steinem and "Wonder Woman"

A spokeswoman for feminism from the 1960s-70s, Gloria Steinem became one of the most famous feminists in American Society. She became such an icon thanks to comic books, primarily "Wonder Woman." It was the first comic she could relate to where the woman had genuine power. Steinem looked up to the creator, William Moulton, for empowering her to even be a feminist. Only later did she realize he may not have had the ideas she portrayed him to have. This further pressured her to question the societal constraints put on women. Eventually Steinem gave up on Wonder Woman, growing out of the comic as Wonder Woman became over-sexualized and increasingly powerless. After some time, though, she realized how much the comic really did save her she began to fight for Wonder Woman's rights once again.

Steinem describes Wonder Woman as "protofeminist" but she could have definitely been more feminist. William Moulton, the author of the "Wonder Woman" comic based the female heroine off his view of what a woman should be. He believed they exist to bring love and peace while men only brought force. Steinem greatly disagreed, questioning society's view of men and women and how detrimental it is to advancement. Men should not be expected to be violent, just as women should not be expected to make men obey. Steinem's belief in feminism is based on the idea of equality.
