From what I recall, Italian has the institutional backup as one of the official languages of the EU. Also through the Academia della Crusca in Florence, new changes in the language are documented and methods are discussed to maintain the standard variation spoken in the country. Laws and literature can be found and even outside of the country (at least in Germany) exist bilingual schools that teach it.

So through media, law and speakers Italian is widely represented and alive.

From personal experience and from what has been discussed in the lecture Language shift and maintaince depend on a series of things.

If a language for example has a socially lower status, current speakers could be more inclined to loose their ability to speak it.
Correlated to that if a language has no institutional back up it looses the importance to be learned or maintained.

A huge factor play parents or the society an individual grows up in. Depending on how one is exposed to a language influences the learning process and therefore the ability to actually use a language.
