The current research examines the influence of social media on emotional well-being and consumption. It investigates the relationship between social media engagement and anxiety in young adults and explores the impact that social media engagement has on consumption--notably, behavior with the intent to mitigate anxiety. A model is tested with participants (n = 795) from the Gen Z and Millennial cohorts. The findings indicate that while having a sense of belonging is negatively related to anxiety, social media engagement and anxiety are positively associated.

Social media plays an integral role in Generation Z's lives. This platform is where they share their thoughts and seek recommendations while staying informed about current events. It serves as their primary outlet for these activities. As such, social media platforms significantly impact Gen Z’s communication, identity creation, and purchasing decisions

Recent correlational research links substantial declines in Gen Z well-being to digital and social media use, yet other work suggests the effects are small and unnoteworthy. To help further disentangle correlation from causation, we conducted a

preregistered 8-day experimental deprivation study with Gen Z individuals (N = 338).
