Coding – unplugged activities we can use in our classrooms and what coding concepts they cover for those of us who don’t have iPads in our classrooms

IT Performance indicators I am struggling with: “demonstrate correct ergonomics” What does that mean? What does that look like?

“With teacher direction follow Public Network Access and Use Policy” What is that and what does that look like when I am teaching this in the classroom?

“ Develop cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with learners of additional cultures” What does that look like in the classroom? What does that mean? What do I teach the kids around this?

“ Investigate various media formats and how they are organized” What media formats? What does that look like? What do I teach the kids” How do I know if they have learned this? What does their learning look like?

“ Retrieve data from a variety of information technology sources” What does that mean? What does that look like in the classroom? How do I assess that? To me it means they can go on the internet and research / look things up but what else can I do? What tools do I have?

“with assistance use technology systems” What do you mean by that? What systems? What does that look like in the classroom?

“…troubleshoot systems and applications” I have no idea where to even start with this. What does this look like? What are the systems and applications? This is technology language that I don’t understand.

Science: Habitats outcome concept 2 – “human choices and actions impact the environment, with a focus on Aboriginal perspectives on interrelatedness” What are those perspectives? I could guess but that does not do it justice as it would be based on my assumptions. What do I teach the kids about this?

"investigate and compare local habitats and their associated populations of plants and animals, inclusive of Aboriginal perspective" What is that perspective? What do I teach my kids?

Social studies: “examine various stories of explorers, inclusive of Acadians, African Nova Scotians, Gaels, and Mi’kmaq and additional cultures of land, ocean, space, and ideas” There is some information in our textbook and teacher’s resource but I feel it does not cover all of these groups. We need more.

Performance indicator - “Evaluate the impact of a modern natural resource exploration on physical environments (with a focus on Aboriginal perspectives)” What are those perspectives? Can I have examples of this?

“Aboriginal perspective on the impact of resource exploration on the physical environment” What are those perspectives? I need more information and support to do this justice. I would like examples and deeper level understanding of the real impact on these communities.

“Gather information of how humans interact with the physical environment (with a focus on Canadian Aboriginal perspective)” What is that perspective? What should my kids know?

“Examine band governance” I do not know about band governance but would like to teach it. It will be difference from place to place, band to band. What does it look like? Tell me more about it. What is the structure and how does it vary from band to band? Which structure should we teach in Nova Scotia?

I would love to sit in on a session and go through each of the ICT outcomes and really understand what it means with someone explaining each one and what it could look like and start to put together ideas of what we can actually DO for lessons with the resources we have.
