An empowering (and challenging) move I did was to confidently correct the misconceptions and the belief in distorted history of my Ilocano relatives about the family of the candidate they wanted to vote for, which I did through stating facts and sending various short articles that support each other’s statements about what happened. To add, as they are all extremely active in the ministry and in church, I also took the time to teach and explain to them verses in the Bible about choosing a leader well (Matthew 20:26, Exodus 118:21). Despite them probably hating me for not being “Solid North” as they say, I believe what I did was empowering in a way that I was able to not only do it without hesitation but also because I was able to defend the candidates who were the most credible and suited for the positions we discussed.

2 Timothy 4:2

Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage-with great patience and careful instruction.

During this election I have fought against disinformation. I used my social media accounts to spread awareness, facts, and explain misconceptions to my family, friends, even my former teachers about history revisionism. It was morally mentally, and logically exhausting when you’d often received constant mockery in fight for your advocacy. In addition, I was able to encourage an apolitical person to practice his right to vote through educating him about the importance of being socially aware.

As student pursuing a career in politics, I believe it is our duty to inform and guide our peers, relatives, and people within our reach to navigate them in choosing a competent leader. The 2022 election is important for every Filipino especially to the youth who are eager to attain positive change for the country.

With this, I exercised my right and freedom as I cast my vote for the deserving leaders who will govern the country, who will fight for the rights of the oppressed, and will serve the Filipinos and the country wholeheartedly.
I felt hopelessness rather than empowerment; and I do not blame all the negative occurrences towards the politicians. The campaigns have been a battle of who are better supporters than who is the best leader to lead the Philippines to its best form. However, as a Christian, this was an encouraging time for me get down on my knees, pray, and communicate more with the Lord; and declare over my nation to be prosperous and pray to the Lord to be in control over everything. It opened my eyes that every nation need the power of prayers. Though its results are not tangible and immediate, some might even say that prayers would not work for the Lord is not real, but I stand firm with my faith in Christ. Wonderfully, my faith expanded and therefore reached people and inspired them to pray more. The prayers we or I say may not immediately rise the Philippine's economy or help the nation at all now, but it aids us people to stay peaceful and spread the truth. I have learned a lot from the happenings today but there are two lessons highlighted in me: one, the power of united people would be difficult or perhaps impossible to destroy for it stands on good education, positivity, experience, goals, and the truth. Two, no matter who wins today and in the future elections to come, no one can dethrone the Lord. He is the center, He is in control, He is indeed more powerful, He reigns, and He is on the throne!

This year's elections changed my life as I discovered a newfound affinity for collective solidarity and volunteerism. This election gave me a glimpse of hope—a glimpse of the Philippines we are all yearning for. My volunteer involvement in rallies and campaigns empowered me to act on my values and principles. I was able to witness a momentum of passion, unity, and kindness amongst Filipinos from all walks of life, soldiering on for one big fight that could change the trajectory of our lives. But more than that, my conviction enabled me to be empowered and further inspired me to become a better citizen who braves the obstacles of everyday life and promotes the common good of all, even in her little ways.

Leveraging our platforms both as a student and Filipino youth in and beyond our echo chambers works wonders. I believe that any other way of collective and organized action against injustice and oppression is crucial towards achieving good governance and all the more, a sustainable and progressive future. What is important is that we can expand and mobilize communities despite fear and be able to work hand in hand despite differences.

"For those who are disheartened, I offer no consolation, only a calm reminder that loving your country is a burden you choose to carry, whatever is the state of its politics.

1. What do you consider an empowering move you have made during this election?

- For me, this past period of campaigning and elections, I think an empowering move I have made is my progressive course of action in expanding my horizons on the elections and the candidates. I made sure that I would make a well-informed vote on the 9th of May by researching on the background and platforms of candidates. I watched almost all of the videos in CNN's Senatorial Forum, collated information on the candidates through the internet, my friends, and my family. Being a first-time voter, I didn't just want to vote for candidates that seemed mostly likely to win so that I won't "waste my vote" on candidates that others would say had no chance. I guaranteed that the candidates I would vote for had their platforms and advocacies aligned with my principles and hopes for the future of the Philippines. I also promised myself that I would hold my chosen candidates accountable - if they get elected. On April 22nd, I got to cast my ballot at the Philippine Embassy of the UAE (absentee voting). Besides this, I also remained steadfast on my trust and belief in the candidates I chose during "discussions" with my family members who were almost completely opposed to my electoral choices. Although most of these discussion were mainly me being lectured and "educated" by elders who strongly disagreed with me, I made sure to lend an ear, remain respectful, while still being able to present my side and my beliefs clearly. It was difficult to be strong in these situations because of the prevalent hierarchy culture in Asian families that forced me to just accept inappropriate comments by my elders and instead exercise my understanding to lengths I couldn't even fathom.

In the end, I was able to stand by my principles, enforce my love for the Philippines, and cast my ballot. The journey does not end here, it is only the start.

#KulayRosasAngBukas

As a first-time voter, I was really hopeful that the youth will be this country’s solution to electing traditional and dynasty politicians. But it turned out disappointing. The election proved how the Philippines is yet to elect leaders that has pure intentions and outstanding track records. Although just like what my candidate would always say – “Tuloy ang laban dahil hindi rito natatapos ang lahat”. Because of her, I wanted to continue fighting for my country where love, truth, justice, and equality will foster rather than hate, corruption, and disinformation.

Democracy is a gift to humanity where we are able to choose leaders that is favored by the majority. But how can this wonderful gift of freedom fail to give us what we deserve – a government where the people are the ones being served and not the other way around wherein people are the ones serving the government. Funny how we are still being controlled by fake news and bandwagon mentality. But on the other hand, I realize that we are all just victims of this rotten system. There is no one to blame but we should collectively work together in order to educate and change this immoral and rotten system.

And this is my first step to helping building a humane and just society for us to live in – making my voice be heard even through my small acts. I voted for the right candidates, I shared verified facts through my social media platforms, I used my freedom of speech in every form possible. This journey may take a while but I am willing to do everything to ensure that there is still a future for me, you, and the other generations to come.

It is true that it was challenging – I was silenced a lot of times, even my own family tried to break me down. Although, I stumbled sometimes but I still continued to fight for what I know is right. This is only the start – a start for building a society where everyone is welcomed, loved, cared for, and heard. Let us work together in order to be part of change – a change where there is real progress and development.

“When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.” - Proverbs 29:2

I felt different emotions during the elections, such as disappointment, anger, sadness, and frustration. I felt hopeless for our country, knowing that we had a fighting chance to work and change the system and the government itself. I felt frustrated knowing that there were more qualified candidates who sadly did not win the 2022 elections. I consider an empowered move when people start protesting and filing petitions for the COMELEC. This protest is not the result of the polls but rather the vote-buying and manipulation of results from the elections. This, for me, was an empowering move knowing that are people were protesting against the manipulations of the results. We can do what we can to continue a well-developed Philippines by not being discouraged by the result but instead using this time to go beyond our comfort zone and try to volunteer in local non-governmental organizations and help the marginalized sector of our country. Now is our time to reach out and share our blessings with them. My uplifting message for every Filipino is that no matter how hard the problems we face, we will always rise and fight stronger than before. As we help hand in hand, we will grow stronger.
" Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming."

One of the empowering moves I have done is to fight for the truth. Disinformation is especially prevalent, sharing credible and relevant information is vital to fight it.

I had put the courage to discuss political matters with my relatives. They believe that because I am young I am not knowledgeable enough to speak about politics. Taking up a political stance was challenging for me because I wanted to keep the peace. I knew that there would be conflict with our beliefs. But knowing that it's not just my life at stake but the entirety of the country and possibly the world, something in me changed. I couldn't be a bystander when so many were fighting for the future of our country, for the truth and justice for the victims and the oppressed.

Therefore, we should continuously speak about our history and the prevalence of disinformation, keep taking up space because as an IS student, I believe that we have the responsibility to guide others in discerning facts and the truths amidst all the information circulating in the digital space. I also tried my best to uphold my integrity and courage to give voice to the oppressed and combat the prevalence of disinformation, violation of freedom, historical revisionism, and political propaganda.

When the results came out, I started to experience a myriad of emotions like anger, disappointment, hopelessness, and sorrow.
