In the painting you can see Indians walking away from their land seeming to be upset , while the Americans go forward with their mission to acquire new land for self benefit. There were a few pull/push factors that encouraged people to migrate west. Such as the economy , a new beginning for you and your family , and the California gold rush. The concept of all these great things out there in the west encouraged people to migrate there.

However , it wasn't as glorious as it sounds. Although it seems like cheap labor and easy money finding gold was very difficult. The usual routine for a person trying to get wealth off of finding gold was to try and fail constantly. Many people lost more money than they made because of how difficult acquiring gold was , it was luck based , and a lot of families suffered from it. Including immigrants , Asian and Mexican immigrants were treated horribly and put to vigorous work for hours a day on low pay. Immigrants during the Gold Rush were treated very poorly , and we stole a lot of land from the Native Americans.  However , because of the promise of being able to find gold and make a lot of money , many people moved to California to try and make their fortune. With the amount of people that moved to California an economy , housing , and jobs were created as a result , the rise of California's economy didn't have much to do with gold itself.

During this time settlers felt that it was justified to take Native American land because they felt that they would use the land more efficiently and productively.  Treaties forced millions of Native Americans onto reservations , which were small parts of land set aside for Native Americans by the government. Even after they were moved into reservations , they were forced to blend into the American culture and accept it as their own, this is called Forced Assimilation. Missionaries tried to force Native Americans into Christianity , there were efforts to make Native Americans become settled farmers , and there were also Indian Boarding schools where Native American children were sent to schools to focus on skills like carpentry and housekeeping.

With this land they could create farms , etc. The Government helped this by creating the Homestead Act of 1862 which gave settlers incredibly cheap land which could be cultivated better than it could have before because of new inventions such as better plows. Another reason famers were attracted to the Great Plains was because of railroads. With the help of railroads , farmers were able to more easily transport their crops to more populated areas. Although the land was very cheap and there were new inventions such as better plows to help with the farming , a lot of settlers and pioneers thought the land was unsuitable for efficient farming , so some people kept moving west or moved away from the Great Plains.
