         <description><![CDATA[<div>&nbsp; &nbsp;People have struggled to live in the surrounding deserts and semi-arid lands for millennia.&nbsp; Nomads have moved their herds and herds to grazing places and oases have provided opportunities for a more stable lifestyle.&nbsp; The cultivation of semi-arid regions encourages soil erosion and is one of the causes of increased desertification.&nbsp; Agriculture in the desert is possible with the help of irrigation, and the Imperial Valley in California provides an example of how previously arid lands can be made productive by importing water from an external source.&nbsp; Many trade routes have been forged in deserts, especially in the Sahara Desert, and were traditionally used by camel caravans carrying salt, gold, ivory, and other goods.&nbsp; Large numbers of slaves were also driven north across the Sahara.&nbsp; There is also some mineral extraction in deserts and uninterrupted sunlight offers the possibility of capturing large amounts of solar energy.</div>]]></description>
