Some Facts about the Great War!

1. Underage children can enter the war if they wanted to. They don't tell their real age because they do it for the love of their country or they did it to escape from the conditions in their country.

2. An explosion in France could be heard from England.

3. WW1 journalists risked their lives the send information to the front line and if they get caught they get the death penalty.

4. Over 12 Million letters got delivered every single week to the front line even in the war it only took 2 days to get delivered in the end they delivered 2 billion letters and
114 million parcels.

5. Plastic surgery got invented in WW1 for facial injuries.

6. They invented blood banks in the war they used them to treat soldiers when they lost too much blood.

I was amazed because of the fact that nearly sixty percent of those who fougt died.

I did not know that one single assassination (of the archduke) was one of the main reasons of the World War 1.

I found the picture of a dog and a soldier both wearing gas masks funny, but also shocking, because they were looking for the wounded in poisonous war areas, and they had to wear the masks to protect themselves.

I think it is beautiful that WW1 officially ended at 11.11 a.m. on 11/11/1918.

I think the fact that ''Shell shock'' and the after effects of gas poisoning both claimed thousands of lives of innocent people who didn't even know that could happen to them is very tragic.

I am amazed that the traces of the heavy shelling are still visible after all those years. In France, there are seemingly gentle hills on the top of Fort de Vaux, but the ground is actually cratered during the battle of Verdun.

What stood me out while reading the text?
1. During Christmas 1914. Some German and British soldiers agreed to stop fighting each other for a day or two. They chatted, sang and even played football together!

2. I did not know that animals were helping in the war. British families gave their pets to the army. Dogs were fast, difficult to shoot at, and they also caught rats! Pet pigeons were drafted in to carry messages over long distances. Germans trained hawks to kill any carrier pigeons they saw.

3. Many women worked in dangerous weapons factories. Women weren’t allowed to join the army, but the war still completely changed their lives. Before the war, a woman’s role was in the home. But with the men away at war, help was needed in the workplace and so millions of women went to work in offices, factories, shops, transport and on farms. Many men were horrified by the idea of females working and, even worse, wearing trousers! But the women proved that they could do the work of men, and do it just as well. Without the women of Britain growing food and making weapons, the war could not have been won.

The Women’s Land Army was made up of 40,000 women. They grew the food that kept people alive

The battle of Somme was one of the deadliest battle's in human history and overal, one of the largest battle's of WWI.
Gasmasks we're quite expensive which is why people died of mustard gas, even if you we're lucky enough to have a mask a lot of them didn't provide adequate protection against many poisonous gasses such as chlorine, mustard, bromine and phosgene gas. Soldiers often suffered from pain, were asphyxiated and had chemical burns. Because of that a lot of soldiers became blind and eventually died.

In Belgium these miners detonated over 900,000 pounds of explosive at the same time destroying the German frontline. The explosion was so loud and powerful, that it was heard by the British prime minister (David Lloyd George). You could literally hear it from 140 miles away in Downing Street London.
