It was a religious revival movement in the early 1800's. People traveled across the frontier and gathered people to join their religion. Ministers held prayer meetings daily where people could gather. Peter Cartwright was a famous preacher that traveled and preformed prayer meetings. He preached about how "all sin consists in selfishness" and that religious faith led people to help others. They taught people that they could be saved through the revivals and tried to recruit more people to join their church and religion.

By the late 18th Century not many people attended church because of work. They thought God judged on how they lived their lives, not their attendance in church. The original Great Awakening took place in the Colonies in the mid 1700's. Protestant Ministers set forth religious revivals because they feared the spiritual well-being of their followers. The results of the revival was that there were more people practicing religion after that although fights started to occur between protestants. Afterwards this lead to social reformation such as Woman's suffrage and the Anti-Slavery Abolitionist Movement

More religions flourished such as: Baptists, Methodists and Presbyterian
There were more black protestant churches. There were also more religious and bible schools. There was a division between the North and South because they held different beliefs; Anti-slavery in the north and pro-slavery in the South. People who disagreed with the Second Great Awakening were called "Old Lights". "New Lights" were people who agreed with the new movements. The two groups forming was causing churches to split as well. Also the attendance of women in churches increased.

Charles Finney was a Presbyterian minister and a leader of The Second Great Awakening. He attended law school and when giving speeches, his messages seemed to be more of a lawyer's argument than a sermon. One change he made was that women were allowed to pray in mixed public meetings.
