The hemoglobin molecules has 4 subunits making it a quaternary protein. Each subunit which is a tertiary protein is called a heme group which contains one iron atom. Each iron atom can bind to one oxygen atom. So the whole hemoglobin molecule can carry four oxygens. When the first oxygen atom binds to the first iron atom a conformational change occurs in the shape of the hemoglobin causing the other heme groups to become oxygenated more easily. Making the ability for hemoglobin to bind more oxygen more easily. This is called cooperative binding.
