" Wounded horses.'' says Kat. It's unendurable. It is the martyred creation, wild with anguish, filled with terror, and groaning." It is night time and it is quiet then the silence breaks it's an bombardment a soldier yells take cover , a goes under Paul's arm in terror .  Paul realizes he has the same shoulders as Kemmerich' s  Paul notice he is scared and wants to protect him because he didn't get a chance with Kemmerich . Paul put the helmet on the fair headed recruit's butt until the bombardment ends . The bombardment  ends and he tells the recruit to go throw his underwear in the  bushes . They move on and Paul continues to show leader ship to the recruit .

It affected paul in many ways.One way it affected paul was the mask was not so tight so he didn't want to breath so had that he would get some of the gas into his mask and die. The gas also affected paul because somebody was trying to take off the mask and he was trying to help him so he wouldn't die so if he was to breath really hard trying to help someone out he could die himself.Another reason was if he breath to hard he would fog up the mask and only way for him to get it not being fog is to take the mask off and would breath in the gas.

But then more explosions were going so Paul put the helmet on the recruits butt to protect it from getting shot. When everything was over  Paul sees the boy  had an accident but instead of being childish Paul understood his situation and helped him out.
 This event effects Paul it reminds him of his friend kimmerick who died . Also, now he has made a good impact on the new recruit and made him feel safe like a father figure.

The New Recruit getting hurt reminded him of Kemmerich because earlier in the texted his shoulders were strong like Kemmerich´s shoulders were and he was scared like Kemmerich was before he pasted away. This event really affected Paul because he was supposed to protect Kemmerich but he couldn´t and then he tried to protect him but he ended up wounded just like Kemmerich. But  this event caused Paul to just want to kill the boy because he failed again and it´s better for him to get killed then to have to suffer later on.         This can effect Paul because the fair headed recruit had similar shoulders to Kemmerich's according to Paul. Kemmerich had been shot in the leg in war then died. Paul was told to protect him, which is ironic because the recruit had went under Paul frightened by the war. Paul almost felt like it was his duty to protect the recruit. The recruit will almost die the same way as Kemmerich did. Paul failed the recruit and Kemmerich.

As a result Kat decides to put a end to the young recruit's pain because soon he will be screaming in "intolerable pain".

Because this is the same young recruit that Paul treated him like a child and tried to protect his bottom from the shooting,  this now effects Paul. We know this because the recruits underpants are missing, the recruits underpants are missing because Paul noticed that the recruit did a number two on himself, since the recruit did that Paul advised the recruit to remove his underpants and states "That's no disgrace". Also, this affects Paul because after making an effort to protect him this kid is about to die. They then decide that they should just kill him to end his misery. But they didn't because there were others around.
                   This event affects Paul because he then realizes that it is the recruit he tried to help earlier. The recruit had got scared and got under Paul's arm for protection. This made Paul think of his deceased friend Kemmerich that he promised to protect. He then puts the recruits fallen helmet on his butt to keep him from getting shot there (which could cause a limp). The recruit takes it off then realized he had his own feces in his pants. Paul then tells the recruit to throw his underwear away. Paul's first response was to help him, soon after he realized that he was going to feel miserable after the pain kicks in, he stopped. Without question, Paul and Kat decided to put an end to his misery and kill him instantly.

     This affects Paul because earlier in the book Paul's friend Kemmerich died in the war even though Paul was trying to protect him.When Paul first found the recruit he reminded him f Kemmerich so Paul would try to protect this recruit so he wouldn't end up like Kemmerich. As a reaction to this, the soldier tries to take off his gas mask because he needed to breathe, but taking off the mask means that he would die. So Kropp holds his arm back so that he doesn't cause his own death while Paul and Kat attempt to free his arm by lifting the coffin, which fails. Soon after the soldier faints so Kropp helps the duo in lifting the coffin and the three succeed in lifting the coffin

This event effects Paul in a way that gives him more experience. The recruit reminded Paul of Kemmerich so when the recruit was under his arm he felt as though he needed to proctect him. He considered him self protecting him so when the recruit got shot on his hip after the fact that Paul put the helmet on his butt Paul felt heartbroken.

The  recruit was in terror so he ran over to Paul and crawls under his arm for protection. Soon they realize that the recruit has pooped on himself, however Paul doesn't make fun of him. Instead Paul comforts him by telling him others have done the same thing, and telling him what to do with the underwear. Paul is being understanding towards this recruit by making him feel comfortable about the situation and also showing compassion towards the recruit. 

This effected Paul because it reminded him of Kemmerich. Kemmerich's mother told Paul to look out for him in the field, but Kemmerich ends up passing away. Paul makes up for that by helping out a younger recruit that is terrified. Paul shows that he is warmhearted by taking him under his wing instead of letting the recruit sit in fear. The recruit had taken a liking to Paul because of his kind gesture on the second bombardment the recruit found his way under Paul leaving his behind unprotected so Paul took his helmet and put it on his behind to keep him from being shot in the behind. The recruit tries to take his gas mask off to lift the coffin up, but when Paul and Kat see him they twist his other arm back to stop him and the recruit faints. The bombardment ended, Kat and Paul lifts the coffin off of the recruits arm and sees that he had been shot in the hip. They tries to stop the bleeding by using the recruits underwear but they see that he have non on, then Paul takes a closer look at the recruit and sees that it's the fair-headed boy from earlier.

    This event effects Paul because the boy reminded him of Kemmrich and he was suppose to protect Kemmrich but he didn't. By not protecting the fair-headed boy is was like he wasn't protecting Kemmrich all over again. On page 68 it explains,"In a momentary lull his voice reaches me.GAS--GAS--GAS--.Pass it on." 
Then, when they relesed the gas bomb the  soliders had to put on their gas mask,to prevent a sickness that would cause them to possibly die. After, the soliders put on their gas mask, one of the emeies have shot the recruit which caused the coffin to fall on his arm.Lastly, while Paul has on his gas mask he couldnt breath,which leds into descrpitive imargy about what was happing to him. Without Question,this event can be explained by showing what happend with gas attack.

The events that are shown in the book effect Paul because,he was is the one that shows smpothy towards people and he helps people with their promblems. On page 62,it explains"Thats no disgrace".This shows how Paul is understanding toward the recruit,because he is understanding of him. The gas mask is supposed to help Paul breath, but instead Paul had trouble breathing. The text states "Inside the gas mask my head booms and roars it is nigh bursting. My lungs are tight, they breathe always the same hot, used up air, the veins on my temples are swollen. I feel I am suffocating". This is an important event because it shows that the gas mask wasn't very helpful to Paul it was actually hurting him. In conclusion the gas mask is one major incident that happened in chapter four.
The gas mask incident effects Paul because he was the one wearing it. Paul was suffocating in the gas mask when he thought it was going to help him breath better, and survive as the text states. Also the incident would have gotten worse if Paul didn't take the mask off. This is a major incident that effected Paul in chapter four.

Before the bombs were set off Kat had a feeling that another bombardment was coming. As the bomb were landing closer and closer to them, the recruit was getting terrified. The recruit got under Paul arm and Paul put the his helmet on his butt to protect it. His the bombs keep coming the recruit poop on his self. Paul made him feel comfortable and told him he wasn't the only person who done that. So that's what happen. 
 This event affected Paul by making him have flash backs. Paul knew Kemmerich mother asked Paul to protect him but Paul knew it was impossible. Paul was to make sure the young recruit wasn't going to get hurt.
