Dear, John Doe

I was one of the few people to be selected in an experiment with time travel, and it worked somehow, and I got sent to New Zealand. I went around and looked at everything, eventually running into Ernest Rutherford. As you know with the gold foil experiment in 1911, Rutherford used a lead box with radium inside of it with a little hole to fire the α (alpha) particles. As almost all of the α particles went through, some deflected off of the nucleus’ near the α particles, unlike Thomson’s model, which was depicting that all of the α particles go through the atom. With this, he made a new model of the atom, which was right and still wrong in some parts. Hope I’ll see you when I get back from this timeline.

Sincerely,

Josh L.

James Chadwick was born in Cheshire, England, in October 1891. This British Physicist attended Manchester University in 1908 and graduated from an Honours School of Physics in 1911. After that he spent the next two years with Professor Rutherford in the Physical Laboratory in Manchester, gaining is M.Sc (or Master Of Science) degree. During WW1, he was interned at a german camp in Ruhleben . After the word war he returned to England to accept the Wollaston Studentship at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and was still working with Rutherford. When Rutherford found that he could disintegrate atoms by bombarding nitrogen with alpha particles with the emission of a proton. Chadwick joined Rutherford to accomplish the study of atomic nuclei. In 1927 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society. If you don't know what that is, it is when someone makes a big contribution to the improvement of natural knowledge. Five years after being elected, in 1932. He made a huge discovery for the domain of nuclear science. He proved the existence of what we know as, neutrons. Neutrons he discovered where elementary particles that were negatively charged. In contrast with the alpha rays which were positively charged and so they repelled by the electrical forces presented in the nucleus of heavy atoms. In the atomic disintegration that (according to the paragraph I was reading) "Need not overcome an electric barrier and is capable of penetrating and splitting the nucleus of even the heaviest elements." This led Chadwick to the preparation of uranium 234 and towards the creation of the atomic bomb. Because of this, he was awarded the Hughes Medal of the Royal Society and the Nobel Prize of Physics. In 1943-1946 he worked in the U.S. as head of the British mission for the development of the atomic bomb. After this, he went back to England and retired in 1948. He published many papers on the topic of radioactivity and connected problems. James Chadwick was knighted in 1945. After all of this, I believe Chadwick had a nice and happy life. He enjoyed gardening and fishing. He had a wife and twin duaghters.

He was turning 42, there was some weird dish he was eating, I guess some special birthday thing. There was so much I wanted to ask him, how was he so good at math, how did he make such a complex theory at such a young age.

I knocked on his door, he came to the door saying what I would think is hello. When I responded back in English he spoke english but with a thick german accent. He asked me who I was, understandably so. It’s not everyday a very tall woman comes knocking at your door in very unfamiliar clothing at 7 p.m.

Once I attempted to explain who I was he allowed me inside to do a short interview. I first asked him how he was so great at math. He said he just kinda had the skills, he practiced them but he was just always pretty good at math. Then I asked how he came up with the theory and how his theory is still used today. He said it just made sense to him everything added up perfectly, he also said it was amazing that he had such a great theory that it stuck.

After those questions the timer on the machine ran out telling me I needed to go back to the present. I told Heisenberg goodbye and was on my way.

John Dalton is a english physicist born in september 6 1766. He has a theory called the atomic theory. He believes that everything and everyone is made up of small particles that we are unable to see. He also has discovered what he calls daltonism or color blindness he explained it as unable to see certain colors and replaced by other colors. He said that an atom is a small sphere that together creates large things like us. he Performed experiments mixing and separating substances to create a 3-part atomic theory.

It took a long time for them to figure it out but they did,and thanks to them now everyone knows how atoms works. When i learned about each scientist and their theory i found each of them brilliant, but one stood out for me and it was Ernest Rutherford. He was a scientist that discovered that the atom consisted in small, positively charged nucleus, he also said that atoms were mostly empty space. He discovered that doing his performing an experiment where he shot particles at a gold foil and noticed that some went through the gold foil and other bounced off. In 1908 he won a nobel prize for his discovery and for many other things.

Ooh sorry, I did not see you there, my name is Sir Joseph John Thomson I am a physicist from Cheetham hill. One day I was thinking and thinking to myself and I just so happened to wonder about the strangest thing. I was thinking about if there are more parts to the atom than meets the eye. So I built a cathode ray tube. This invention showed me these small itty-bitty negatively charged subatomic particles or electrons as I called them that were a part of an atom I was studying. Then I made this model of how the atom looked like plum pudding my mother used to make. It looked like ¨little negatively-charged electrons embedded inside a positively-charged soup¨.So in time I became famous for my brilliant discovery and the whole world was impacted and it changed the course of history forever. And one day while I was giving a speech a smart young reporter named Kira-lavae came up to me and ask for an interview and she wanted to know how I managed to achieve such an influential discovery and I gave her all the tea

I have a theory that if I use a sheet of gold foil and these alpha rays, then maybe I can prove it. I lined this piece of metal foil with zinc, and am shooting alpha rays at it. So far, most have passed through, therefore proving my theory. I hope that my colleagues will find my experiment quite interesting or amazing, so that I can possibly make a breakthrough in science. I believe that the way this worked is that a large cluster of these particles is in the middle of the atoms, and the alpha rays have hit this cluster.

Sincerely,

Ernest Rutherford

In 1909 I got my masters in Physics and in 1911 i got my Doctor’s degree. Speaking of 1911 i met J.J Thomson. He is a nice man. He helped and guided me through my work but at the same time he pursued his own theoretical studies. In 1913-1914 I held a Lectureship in Physics at Copenhagen University. In 1916 I was appointed Professor of Theoretical Physics at Copenhagen University. But those were fun days but back to today 1922 Just if you a curious why i got the Nobel Prize it was because I discovered the atom. I know that is so cool i was working one day and i was so tired of working i was going to go home in like 10 minutes and then that is when it happened that's when my goal came true i discovered that electrons travel in separate orbits around the nucleus and that the number of electrons in the outer orbit determines the properties of an element.

Dear Mrs. Deere, Today September 18, 1926 was the day I went to a park ,and saw this man. The man looked just like Ernest Rutherford. I went up to him and asked him if he was Ernest Rutherford. He said yes. I got so excited. I wanted to know so much about his experiment that he did with the gold foil. He started to tell me about the alpha particles and the sheet of pure gold. Rutherford was telling me how he placed a sample of a radioactive metal inside a box with a pinhole in it. He went more and more on about how the alpha particles escaped out of the pinhole in the same directions as the gold foil. The gold foil was surrounded by a detector. Someone came by and said to RutherFord " What are you doing? You aren't supposed to be out here." After that person came Rutherford told me bye. I said bye. Sorry for such a long letter, I just wanted to tell you what happened.

Dear Jreme, i would like you to meant my new friend. His name is James Chadwick. He was born on October 30 1891. He was 44 when he was awarded the nobel prize in 1935. On February 1927 the chadwick twins were born. Their names are Judith and Joanna. I had the pleasure of meeting them they are currently 93 years old. 2 years before the twins were born he got married to the love of his life. His wife is Aileen Stwart-brown. Aileen & James got married August 1925. James graduated from 3 different colleges. The first college is The university of Manchester, the second one is The university of victoria Manchester and the last one is The university of Cambridge. Unfortunately he died July 24 1974. But before i sent this letter i want to tell you about the atom he discovered. By 1920, physicists knew that most of the mass of the atom was located in a nucleus at its center and that's this central core contains protons. In May 1932 James Chadwick announced that the core also contained a new uncharged particle, which he called the neutron. Now that i told you everything about my adventure. Now i would like to know a little bit about yours. I just have few question. My first question is i hear he started teaching very early what age did he start teaching. My second question is when did he publish his first peace of work. I heard that he got married and had kids id that true? My last question is when was he born and when did he die. Well those are all my questions. I hope to talk to you soon

Love,Isabela <3

I had a dream last night. I was in Rutherford's laboratory and he had me assisting him in an experiment. What experiment you may be asking? The gold foil experiment! He set up the lead box and had me set the piece of radium inside and place the gold foil in front. I was watching as nothing happened and then he explained to me that what should happen is that the alpha particles from the radium should be going straight through the extremely thin piece of gold foil. But, what actually happened is that most of the alpha particles went through except for a few. Some had bounced away from the foil! He said that this disproves the plum pudding theory of the atom. He concluded that atoms are just small masses that are composed of one bunch of particles that he called a nucleus. He thanked me for my help and I opened the door to his lab and woke up.

I decided to perform an experiment. I took a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT for short) to prove my theory on atoms. I placed magnets on the tube and switched it on and lo and behold, the "ray" in the tube was being deflected around!
I then thought up a design for the atoms and me being famished that evening, called it the Plum Pudding Model. I am long gone now, but my discovery has helped many.

in the year 1908 Ernest Ruther discovered J.J thomson was wrong, the alpha particles don't just go through some of these alpha particles were bouncing away from the nucleus. he used alpha particles and gold foil to identity this discovery. he had found a new way helping us lead to the full way of atoms as we know today.
