Educate the public about the different kinds of recycling bins in public spaces. Most people do not know that if we throw non-recyclables inside a recyclable bin, it will contaminate the recyclables and therefore, they can not be recycled anymore. The yellow bin is for recycling non-contaminated plastics. By educating people to throw waste in the correct place, we could increase the recycling rate for plastics as there would be more plastics that are not contaminated.

Citizens can spread awareness using social media. When more people become aware of the low rate of recycling of plastic waste, and the problems that arise because of it, they are more likely to be motivated to do their part and recycle more themselves. Social media activists and influencers may also have a larger outreach than most people and can convince more people to do their part to recycle.

Citizens can also start separating their waste into recyclables and non-recyclables. This will ensure that there is no contamination of items that can be recycled, so that the rate of recycling will increase as more items will be able to be recycled.

Learn about recycling especially plastic waste and learn the requirements for plastic waste to be recycled
-> the plastic that can be recycled cannot be contaminated by organic waste. Citizens can wash and dry their own plastic waste to have as much as plastic waste recycle (or at least with this knowledge, citizens won’t contaminate other plastic that are suitable for recycling)
3. Teach children and other family members about plastic waste and encourage them to use less plastic and recycle them

- Citizens can make efforts as a community by organising recycling drives to increase Singapore’s rate of plastic recycling
- They can set community goals during the drive for them to achieve as a group
- Residents can bring plastic materials to a communal area for recycling
- Other residents can help check to ensure that the plastic materials are recyclable
- For example, to collect and wash 200 plastic water bottles by the end of the month, contributed by different residents where they have an allocated date and time for volunteers to gather at the communal area and help out in ensuring the plastic bottles are washed and clean for recycling
- This way, citizens can be motivated by each other and help one another out to increase the number of plastic materials being sent for recycling and ensuring the quality of plastic materials being recycled is appropriate, increasing the rate of plastic recycling in Singapore within their own community
