Cyrus the Great's conquest of the Greek-inhabited region in 547 BCE marked the beginning of the confict between the Persian Empire and the broken political world of the Greeks. The Persians appointed a tyrant to rule each of India's independent cities in an effort to exert control. Both the Greeks and the Persians would find themselves in a lot of trouble as a result of this.
