The possibilities of the cyber world are endless. There is an endless amount to learn, to do, and people to interact with. With that being said, there is a lot to consider about who you may be interacting with. When you are behind a screen, what you say and do is very different than in person. In person, there are aspects of communication that dictate the type of confrontation you have. Tone, facial expressions, and body language for instance. On a computer, all of that is eliminated. The purpose of this netiquette rule is to remind internet users that people on the internet are still human, though they may be behind a screen. This doesn't mean that students shouldn’t express themselves freely and speak their mind, however they should not forget that the people they may engage in conversation with are real, and they have feelings and should be treated with the same respect you would like to receive. I chose this etiquette because I believe that the consequences of not following this rule can be very detrimental. The minute you forget that the person you are interacting with is a real person, is the minute you enter a very dangerous place. Cyber bullying arises from people being careless on the internet and hiding behind a screen to say harmful things to others. Because of this, I believe this is a very important rule to teach to all students using the internet.

I believe that netiquette number one might be one of the most important rules there are to teach internet users. As a teacher, one of my main goals in and out of the classroom would be to prevent bullying. Our classrooms should be a place for learning, a place where students feel safe. When students log onto the internet, the same applies. It is very easy to forget that there are real humans on the other side of the screen. In order to teach this netiquette, I believe it would be beneficial to show students the dangers and consequences of not following it. This can be done by telling students true stories about cyberbullying in order for them to understand that their actions do in fact have real consequences.

Online, the same rules of behavior apply that do in real life. Many times, people can forget this because it is a lot easier to say things behind a screen than it is in person. Good online etiquette involves the same set of rules as in person.

I chose this etiquette because it's important to teach students that how they act online should be no different than how they act in a classroom, or in daily life in general. If a child is unsure of how to act in a certain situation they may find themselves in online, chances are how they would act if it was a real life situation is a good answer. Rules and Laws still apply online and it doesn't hurt to remind students that they must abide by them online just as they would in real life.

A very important netiquette to follow is respecting others privacy. The internet is a place where many people go to express themselves and share and learn about others as well. Just as in real life you would respect the privacy of others, the same should go for online. What people choose to post or share online is their own personal choice, however students should learn to have the courtesy of respecting it.

I chose this etiquette because I think it is highly important for students to learn the importance of internet privacy and how to respect the privacy of others on line. Students should know that there is no difference between respecting someones privacy in real life and online.

Although many of the netiquettes previously talked about warn students about the negatives and dangers of the cyber world, there are also some netiquettes that outline positives of using the internet.
There is an endless amount of knowledge to discover on the internet and a huge part of that comes from what people share. The purpose of this netiquette is to teach students to do their part. The things you learn, can be incredibly beneficial to others online. Sharing your knowledge on the internet can be fun. Students should learn to engage in intellectual conversations with others in which new knowledge is being mutually shared. Of course, precautions should be taken to prevent copyright issues, however I believe this is a very beneficial netiquette to learn.

I believe that the best way to teach students about this netiquette is to put in perspective how important it truly is. There are certain cliches that are taught over and over again to students but the true meaning of it never really gets through to them. To truly get the importance of this netiquette across in my classroom to students, I would give real life examples to make them understand that the internet is no different than a real life situation. A good rule of thumb I would give my students to follow is before you make a decision online, ask yourself, "How would you feel if the situation was reversed?". Other people's privacy is no joke and it is important to get this message across to all internet users.
