My topic revolves around the idea of Bilingualism and the overall effects of being able to speak more than one language. So far the hardest part has been trying to find credible, unbiased opinions regarding this subject. To help with this, I have turned to sources like google scholar that provides credible resources to try and find appropriate material for my topic. As of right now, one of the best pieces of information that I have found is from an association called NABE, this organization provides advocacy, research, and resources to support bilingual education and promote multilingualism. The overall process to being able to find credible information is not the easiest, it involves having to look into the writer to see if they have a bias on the certain subject and from there eliminating options until being left with good sources. The biggest challenge I have faced, like I mentioned before is writers who are biased. This subject is something that many have a personal connection to, me included, but when needing to gather statistical information having a biased article will not help me provide the most accurate information for my audience.

The topic I have chosen to speak on is Parent-Teacher Relationships. This topic to me is very important for the success of our children/students. I feel very strongly that we must build those relationships not just for the academic part but for our children's future. I have done a lot of research on this from references back 30 years ago to current day. All stated that this holds true that building and maintaining Parent-Teacher relations helps our students to have:

Better academic performance, Social skills, Communication skills, Trust, and Emotional skills.

Finding some challenges that some people do not understand how this benefits our students socially and emotionally is compelling to me. Finding the case studies and surveys with clear documentation proves that it truly does work. But another key component to this factor is that if the parent and teacher want the relationship and how much is either of them willing to put the effort into building such a relationship?

Gen Z in the workplace is the topic I have chosen to research. There are stereotypes surrounding Gen Z and the behavior their peers witness in a work environment. Every age group possesses specific talents and experiences, and similarly, Gen Z brings unique skills and perspectives. They are often perceived as eager but are sometimes criticized for lacking commitment and work ethic. I believe the latter two are areas to explore.

I had a bit of a challenge finding a valid online source to gather more insight into the topic. In addition, it is challenging to find a supporting reference for the angle I would like to present. Currently, I am utilizing information from (SHRM) Society for Human Resource Management, a reputable global organization that supports HR professionals to help with personnel and labor management. Also, I am using a peer-reviewed journal that focuses on applied research and case studies in the areas of organizational development, employee training, and management practices.

The topic I have chosen to speak on is the impact clothing waste has on the environment. I have enjoyed researching this topic. Clothing is such a staple seller around the globe. Mass production of clothing is made each year. We create more clothes but we get rid of less. EARTH.ORG states that in America alone, 85% of American clothing ends up in a landfill. Not only is this harmful to the environment but it is also wasteful. Did you know it takes 20,000 liters of water to produce one kilogram of cotton? 60% of clothing in America is made from cotton. Water is a need. We should not be wasting it, especially with the amount of clothing we produce. A challenge I have come across with finding information is not having the same information repeated multiple times. Trying to find new and different examples and/or information from different articles has been a little difficult but I still find it fun. I find the informational articles the most useful. Finding the facts and percentages of everything helps describe the impact clothing waste has on the environment.

The topic that I have chosen is the funding of and benefits of arts education in school systems. I will be making an argument that it is important to fund the arts the same way that we provide resources and focus on traditional core subjects like science, math, history, etc. There are many academic publications about this topic from university professors who teach education, psychology, or sociology courses. These articles are easily accessible and come from unbiased academic professionals. There is also quite a bit of anecdotal evidence that people share on the internet and social media about the their personal experiences concerning the benefits of arts education during their childhood. I can also speak to the benefit that I have had from a first person perspective as someone who received quite a bit of arts education which led to my career as a professional ballet dancer and how that translated into a skillset that greatly benefitted me in corporate America and as a manager.

The topic I’ll be discussing is the prevalence and impact of mental health in children and why it is important to cover the topic in grade school. I came across a journal that focuses on the past five years and shares the effect of COVID. The rise of mental health in children took place right after covid. Just like adults, they also went through one of the biggest changes in their life. The decline of mental health affected the adolescent (12-17) age group the most, especially in developmental disorders such as ADD/ADHD, autism, and learning disabilities. There were issues before COVID took place that had an impact on this matter that the pandemic only heightened. This includes socio demographics factors, like healthcare use, access to providers and insurance, family income, resources, family structure, parental age, etc.

It was difficult trying to find articles that pertained strictly to US children which is my focus. I either found articles from children all over the country or articles that weren’t relevant enough. I wanted to find articles that shared different information and different factors that affect a child’s mental health. This journal I came across focuses on differ4ent aspects and even compares the outcome of mental health precovid, during and after.

The topic that I have chosen to speak on is the importance of breast cancer awareness, and how it is important to know about the risk factors, and treatment process that a person need to be aware of. While doing my research I have found a lot of articles that are relatable to my topic since it is such a broad topic that is very important to me. I had wonder if I could narrow my topic and focus on just mammogram screenings; because my survey was geared to mammograms. I'm being hopeful that I can do some more research to find more articles based on mammogram screenings, and how it relates to my own personal journey. I can remember when I had to make an appointment about ten years ago to get my first mammogram screening after I had discovered a lump on my left breast after doing a self examination.

The topic I have chosen will be about PTSD which will lead to persuasive of using Virtual Reality as a natural treatment for PTSD. I will be informing what PTSD is the symptoms and provide demographics about PTSD with different ages. There is a lot of information for this topic so being able to get information should mostly be easy. The only challenge I might have is finding a really good statistics because with statistics any information can be skewed or over exaggerated, but I might be able to find something in n academic journal that might have it. As I said statistics change to so things can be a lot higher than what I might find. I want to educate the class and do what Dr. Marti said so I don't repeat information is give a spiel on what PTSD is and then persuasive will be using virtual reality and making an argument about using it as a natural way rather than using the tradition drug that comes with side effects to physical health. Something interesting I found is Canda has the highest risk of PTSD for whatever reason. Individuals aged 49 to 59 have high PTSD rates. PTSD also depends on how traumatic event was for an individual. There is a lot of things to provide for my presentation for PTSD. I think the most sources that are useful obviously would be creditable academic journal's because they are trusted peer reviewed with accurate information over other sources.

To prepare this presentation on why teachers should be required to attend empathy and cultural-awareness training, I consulted several reliable sources. These included the U.S. Department of Education website, peer-reviewed journals accessed through the Peace Library Resource, and insights from my own experiences working in education. I also drew on lessons from my culturally relevant classes at Peace and reviewed the IRIS program from a previous semester, which provided a wealth of useful information. The biggest challenge I faced during research was deciding whether to focus primarily on empathy or on cultural-awareness training as the required component, since both are important and closely connected.
