Writing the critical response essay was initially difficult for me. I struggled to maintain an objective tone and think critically rather than letting my personal biases shape my analysis. My essay focused on Arthur Brooks’ article, “Find More Ways to Be an Outsider,” which emphasizes the benefits of embracing outsider status. Because I personally related to the topic—having recently moved across the country and starting over in an unfamiliar place—it was hard to separate my own emotions from the argument. What ultimately helped me improve was the feedback I received from my classmates, as well as reviewing the brainstorms others had posted about the same article. Their perspectives gave me a clearer sense of what my essay was missing and how I could strengthen my argument.

Using an outline was a real challenge for me because I’m used to writing everything out at once to organize my thoughts. Trying to follow a structured plan made me feel scattered, and by the time I submitted my outline, I had lost sight of the actual goal—to analyze the poem or short story I had chosen. Thankfully, the feedback I received from both the discussion post and Ms. Pressley-Brown helped me recognize where I had gone off track and gave me a clear direction for how to improve.

Writing the research argument essay proved to be more difficult for me than the first one. While I enjoyed the process of finding and reading articles, it took me some time to fully understand that the essay’s main goal was to analyze the text I had selected. After receiving feedback on my annotated bibliography, I felt more prepared and confident to approach the assignment. I pushed myself to include more of my own analysis rather than relying too heavily on citations and direct quotes. Initially, I didn’t think I’d have much to say in the counterargument section, but once I found a part of the text that could be interpreted from another angle, it became one of the most engaging parts of the essay to write.
