on paper, woojae’s life looked charmed: successful parents, a quiet hometown, and a solid future. he was the middle child of three children. his mother dreamt of styling for rock bands, but instead built up a successful beauty empire of sorts that originated from a small store and eventually grew to a series of salons, spas, and clothing boutiques across cities and popular touristy towns. his father was a few years older and already a renowned attorney, who had a successful firm in the city, but insisted on raising his family wineport. he was a local boy who never forgot his roots, wanting his children to live in a safer and simpler place, not needing the stresses that came with living and competing in the big city. they had enough time before needing such extra worries.

while living in a small town seems peaceful, often it came with its own set of problems and politics. everyone knew everyone else’s drama. if someone had issues with another local, it was not exactly easy to hide from them. that was the case for woojae’s family, for they were his father’s second family. despite his father’s divorce happening years before his parents’ relationship, his first wife’s children and the rest of the jin relatives never accepted the new family. his father’s first wife’s children and other jin relatives never invited them to family events and never acknowledged them publicly; they only acknowledged his father. funny, considering how his father’s relatives constantly had people keeping tabs on them. adults would ask the once naïve woojae innocent-sounding questions about his family, which he would answer out of politeness, only to find out they were reporting back to his father’s relatives. his maternal grandparents did everything to make up for it. woojae still grew up with the ache of being unwanted and needing something to prove, that he didn’t need his the family that refused to claim him and his siblings.

despite the whispers behind his back and lack of people to trust, woojae gritted his teeth and did his best to excel in whatever he took part in. graduating at the top of his class with high scores on his csat, he saw it as his ticket out of wineport. he sought greatness, surpassing those who scorned him. however, woojae’s family always held a strong pull on him, and he frequently returned home once or twice a month to see them. even then, he was drawn back to the town that he always had his frustrations with. an odd sentimental value that left a bittersweet taste.

this continued on even into his law school years. he somehow found the time to visit home once or twice a month. during the summers, he interned at the local prosecutor’s office, which kept him close to his family. in the meantime, he did his more impressive internships during the school year, working with supreme court justices and top-notch law firms in the city. it was his schooling and work that slowly changed the way people perceived him, his mother, and siblings. they weren’t the center of scandal. instead, the family finally impressed people.

despite meeting and marrying during law school, woojae and his wife had a plan that satisfied them. he worked as a prosecutor in the city, but always returned to wineport during the weekends. while the two discussed children, they agreed to give it some time to let woojae settle into their careers. however, they knew they wanted to raise their kids in wineport. he didn’t realize how similar he was to his father, both men enjoying the simpler lifestyle of their hometowns, despite their success in the bustling city. many thought that woojae would have taken over the family’s practice, but he wanted to help the people, something possible through his career as a prosecutor.

like his father, woojae was an up and rising figure in the field. even with his rookie status, he was a go-getter that hated losing. he went above and beyond to seek justice, but was often time too emotionally invested in his cases. a loss was not simply a damaging number in his stats. he viewed the result as a failure, disappointing those that mattered. people joked that he was married to his career while his wife was his mistress. however, it was difficult for him not to be buried in his work. at the time, this frustrated his wife, but she reminded herself she knew what she was getting into when she married woojae.

maybe she didn’t know woojae as well as she thought she did. for years, woojae sporadically pursued a case originating from his prosecutor internship. he along with a mentor of his, were investigating a cult, the rising heart. to many, the rising heart was a philanthropic group, but it only abused the pureness and greatness of religion and faith into something evil and twisted. the rising heart cult abused women and children. members went missing without a trace. individuals squandered their savings on this group. however, efforts proved futile. with hands in the government and business, the rising heart always seemed to find their way out, whether it was through a loophole or through their connections. the two struggled to make the case stick, despite the evidence blaring right at everyone, it seemed like nothing was going right for them. woojae’s achievements didn’t prevent him from feeling failure with this case.

then it all went wrong three years ago.

it first started when he met her. she was a beauty, a mystery that he was drawn to. it started off with simple banter and curiosity, but soon he was telling her everything about his life. he told her things he couldn’t tell anyone else, not even his wife. soon such a connection led to something deeper, he was falling for her and soon they started their affair.

then he got a call two years ago from someone unexpected. it was his father’s eldest son from his previous marriage, asking woojae for a favor. woojae initially ignored the numerous calls, then yielded to his father’s pressure.

of course he wanted something from him. that was the family for you.

his father’s eldest son begged him to get his son out of jail. the boy had run with the wrong crowd, a certain cult to be exact. the same one that woojae was investigating. his father’s son insisted that as family they should help one another. however, woojae could only scoff, but no one noticed the tense grip he had on his chair during the meeting.

he couldn’t decide which was more puzzling. the cult getting close to him, choosing those that they thought would rattle him up and scare him away, or his father’s family trying to convince him they were family.

time was not on his side though, letting him absorb the situation. it seemed his world came crashing down. his boss at the prosecutor’s office received intimate pictures of woojae and the other woman, who was part of the rising heart. however, he wasn’t the only one that received the pictures, woojae’s wife too ended up with a thick stack of photos that same day.

many believed woojae would lose his job, but his mentor at the prosecutor’s office and his father saved him. while woojae’s father wanted him to enter the family’s firm, he knew that his son’s heart was still deep in the prosecutorial world and that it wasn’t time for him to switch sides. still there were many that wanted woojae to fall and he couldn’t get off the hook so easily. instead of a fast-track promotion to chief prosecutor in the central city office, they transferred him to the wineport prosecutor’s office. despite that one incident, it was difficult to deny that he was a great prosecutor. however, since his move two years ago, he had to fight his way back up and regain his title as deputy prosecutor. despite facing shame and rumors, he strives to restore honor to his family by defeating the cult and reclaiming his former position. still he wonders and questions if everything he has worked towards is even worth it? was it all in vain?
