This is a land based activity, which is simply walking up hills of any height or steepness level, for example mount Snowden which is in Wales, about 3 hours away from Salford, my personal view, having walked up it before; i feel it improves quite a of skills such as teamwork communication skills.
When I went up with other students, many including myself struggled at different points during the walk but we all adjusted to each other’s strengths and weaknesses and supported each other throughout the walk which I feel was the most important skill we needed as a team, including resilience and some degree of fitness as the walk was around 5 hours and 30 minutes.

Hill walking increases leg muscle and also fitness which is useful in policing when needing to chase a suspect or just for a PCSO who may be on the bikes.

Walking for long periods of time also strengthens your heart and makes it grow bigger, this increases your fitness so weather you are joining the military or the police force it will benefit you

There are many routes you could take to reach the summit as shown in this link -https://www.visitsnowdonia.info/snowdon_walks_-_6_routes-95.aspx

Hill walking is used in duke of Edinburgh and in the police cadets as the cadets go on the expeditions which DofE provides, air training corps, the princess trust, NCS and scouts.

DofE is a charity run organisation and can not be run on its own as it is not an independent organisation therefor overall, the police cadet scheme or the air training corps is probably a better option as DofE is provided.

This is a land based activity which requires you and your team mates to guide each other using a map to the right area to find certain pieces.
It can improve quite allot of skills such as team work, it helps when in an expedition which requires map work, trust between team members is very important in a team, this improves trust within the team as while two team members are leading the search with the maps, the rest of the team should trust there judgments for example in a police station when organizing a planned raid, the constables must follow the leading officers instructions and trust them otherwise it would risk the whole operation. Good map work skills would show that planning skills are probably better that another officers without as much experience.

There are many orienteering courses around grater Manchester, and they are commonly used by scouts, girl guides and sometimes in NCS too.

https://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/event - you can take part in any orienteering events in and around Britain.

This activity is simply climbing up rocks, mostly in mountains with high ropes, special equipment is needed depending on how steep it is.

Rock climbing increases muscular strength and endurance, and also flexibility as you often need to stretch in order to reach a rock, pull yourself up towards it, increasing muscle strength particularly around the biceps, this will put any officers who participate in a good advantage while in the front line as there will be times when force will be needed to restrain and arrest a suspect, good strength will be very helpful.

The police cadets, scouts, NCS and the air training corps all take part in rock climbing.

http://www.theclimbingdepot.co.uk/manchester - this indoor center could be accessed for training before going out and doing it outdoor which includes more first aid knowledge and equipment as you will need to know what you need to take. However it does cost to attend the clubs, it is not too far so transport wouldn't be a problem.
A more effective use of your money would be if you buy the equipment and to it outdoor.

Camping is a land based activity which is a an overnight activity, it is used in the police cadets, scouts, girl guides, NCS and mostly in Duke Of Edinburgh.

There are a few skills which need to be mastered before doing this, for example putting up a tent, applying first aid, working in a team, map work, communication and simpler things such as having the correct amount of food with enough calories and also the right amount of clothing (4 layers), and suitable walking shoes which provide good grip and ankle support to reduce the risk of injury.

Having done the bronze DofE practice, I have realized that there are so many skills that you learn when you are out camping with your team as you learn to think more effectively and know what is needed, which would be good in the police as police officers have to make quick decisions and assumptions in various circumstances that they are put in, camping also trains you to think outside the box.

http://www.dofe.org/take-part#k0 - this link will take you to the DofE website where you will be able to take part, and is available anywhere around the U.K.

This is a land based activity which helps people learn to ride a horse, the more it is practiced, the easier it will be to do other things while riding for example policing while on a horse in football games.
the police use the horses for big events so that the mounted officers will have a clear view of everything on the ground which a police officer on the ground may not see.

The scouts, girl guides, and some police cadet divisions do get involved with pony trekking.

It is available in a few centers in and around greater Manchester, this will be very useful in the mounted unit in policing as police officers who do this will get used to riding a horse so much it will start to feel like their second nature, so that when they are on their horse in a football event for example, they will be more focused on the job rather than focusing too much on the horse therefore there presence will make a bigger impact. This sport does still improve team working skills and the officer on the horse needs to trust that the horse will behave and be useful while the horse will need to trust that the officer will look after it. Officers on horses are at an advantage as they can see everything that goes on below them, preventing fights or public order to get more serious.
It is important the officer has good knowledge of first aid in case anyone is injured and very good knowledge on animal care and horses in order to ensure the highest possibility of safety for the officer herself/himself, the horse and the surroundings.

This is a centre in which pony trekking is available in;

Ashton Hall Equestrian Centre

Greater Manchester Ashton Old Hall Farm, Church Lane, Sale, M33 5QQ

Tel: 0161 905 3160 Email: tom.davin@btconnect.com Web: www.ashtonhallequestriancentre.co.uk

NCS (national citizen service):
This gives youths the opportunity to dig out there own potential, and build confidence in themselves, this benefits them in the future as it stays on their CV, giving them a big advantage when applying for jobs or part time jobs which makes them more responsible and capable.
It also gives young people something to do and keeps them occupied so they don't have the opportunity to even start to offend or break the law, as they will learn good secondary socialization instead of being peer pressured by friends to commit a crime.

Youth offending service:
The youth offending service takes in youths who have been in trouble with the police or have offended before, they are then given this opportunity, and through the activities they do, there fitness increases and so does there confidence, also giving them chances to get to know people who are like them and been through similar things may motivate them to lead a better life, this doesn't only benefit the youths themselves but also the society because there are less gangs causing public order, and also helps the police so they can focus on more serious crimes and recruit more officers with the money which would normally be taken up by youths in custody rooms, juvenile centers and youth offenders institutes and the amount of prison officers needed to work there.
it would reduce crime which would also benefit the government as more money will be available for other important things such as ambulances, the army, mental health hospitals.
