Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character in British literature created by the doctor and writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes is an investigator of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. His first appearance was in 1887 in Beeton's Christmas Annual  in the story A Study in Red. In February 1891, the novel The Sign of the Four was published in another magazine, Lippincott's Magazine.  In June 1891, Holmes premiered on the Strand Magazine with the tale "A Scandal in Bohemia."  The tale was so successful that it guaranteed Holmes a long time of publications in Strand Magazine. Additional tales have since appeared, until 1927, totaling four novels and 56 short stories.
