Hearing loss and Memory loss: How are they related?

Hearing loss is caused by nerve damage or exposure to loud sounds or old age. It can cause stress and anxiety because when people cannot hear properly, they tend to get angry and do not want to participate in social settings.

They try and isolate themselves so that they don’t get anxious as they have eliminated the external factor. Ignoring the early signs of hearing loss can lead to permanent and severe damage of the ear.

To avoid these, one should visit a doctor if they start hearing less or blurred and distorted voices.

At Spectra Plus, we are committed to diagnose and give the patient correct course of treatment to enable them the sound of happiness. Our team is dedicated and to make sure that the patient has a better quality of life.

Among many symptoms of hearing loss, the most disturbing and impactful is memory loss. Hearing loss is correlated to memory loss directly. This happens due to the following reasons:

1. CONCENTRATION: When one is having trouble hearing and understanding, the brain automatically shifts more focus on listening than retaining. The increased concentration needed to listen, the brain is not able to store information leading to cognitive overload. One realizes this when he/she is trying to recall the conversation and they are not able to.

2. ISOLATION: Since the person with hearing loss tends to withdraw from social situations and conversations, they isolate themself. The isolation leads to less stimuli for brain to process, it becomes lazy. If this occurs for a long period of time, permanent damage is possible leading to shrinkage of brain further reducing its result. The reduced function and results means reduced recalling and hence memory loss.

3. DEPRESSION: If hearing loss is not treated on time and properly, it can cause stress leading to degeneration of mental health which can further cause depression. Research has shown that depression changes how the brain functions which results in memory loss.

It is important to diagnose and treat hearing loss at an early stage to prevent increased damage. At Spectra Plus, we understand how important hearing is and our experienced audiologists work hard to give you the world class treatment and improve the quality of your life. Hearing the sound of happiness is important for you and your recovery is important for us.

Visit Us :https://www.spectraplusindia.com/

Hearing loss is not always age related. Sometimes hearing loss is also caused by a deformity, trauma or accident. Accident being the most common cause of hearing loss.

It is not always irreversible. Sometimes, it can be treated completely with a surgery and some medications.

The ear consists of an outer ear, middle ear, inner ear and an auditory nerve. The auditory nerve is responsible for sending the information from the ear to brain. If hearing loss is not diagnosed and treated properly, it can cause permanent damage.

At Spectra Plus, our audiologists work round the clock to give our patients accurate diagnosis and best in class treatment to make sure that there are no margins of error.

Hearing loss can be broadly classified into 4 types which are listed as following:

1. CONDUCTIVE HEARING LOSS: In this type of hearing loss, the sound is often obstructed by something in the outer ear preventing it to pass. This type can be treated with a surgery and medicines.

2. ORAL HEARING LOSS: In this type of hearing loss, there is a problem with the working of inner ear which leads to ill functioning of the nerves.

3. MIXED HEARING LOSS: The hearing loss which includes both a conductive and sensorineural loss.

4. AUDITORY NEUROPATHY SPECTRUM DISPORDER: In this type of hearing loss, the sound enters the ear the way it should but due to damage in the inner ear, the sound is not interpreted and organized in a way that brain can decipher and understand.

Hearing loss can also be classified into the following on the basis of its effect:

1. UNILATERAL OR BILATERAL: Unilateral means hearing loss in one or both ears.

2. PRE-LIGUAL OR POST-LINGUAL: If hearing loss happened before a person learned to talk to after he or she learned to talk.

3. SYMMETRICAL OR ASYMMETRICAL: If the degree of loss is same in both ears or different.

4. PROGRESSIVE OR SUDDEN: If hearing loss is worsening over time or happened suddenly.

5. FLUCTUATING OR STABLE: If the hearing loss is changing or it is stable.

6. CONGENITAL OR ACQUIRED: If hearing loss is present since the birth or happened later in life.

Hearing loss should be treated before it progresses because once caught early it can be treated efficiently and not cause further damage.
