Sutton Trust research shows that universities are using the personal statement – they are crucially important for high tariff institutions.

Misconception that the personal statement should be ‘personal’ – more a statement of academic suitability rather than a statement about the individual.

We looked at some examples – clear guidance from course leaders that going into detail about specific elements of the course/subject is useful – gives pupils a chance to demonstrate their academic suitability. 

Admissions tutors particularly value sections in which students pursue a focused topic of interest

Except for medicine, it doesn’t matter what pupils have done, it matters what they’ve read and reflected on. For medicine pupils, they do need to reflect on a real medical experience.

Structure and detail:

Why do you want to study your chosen course?

Is there a specific topic of interest that you can discuss in detail?

What have you learnt from taking part in course-related activities?

What are your extra-curricular activities?

For the topic of interest paragraph:

Focus on a small/specific topic

Select 2-3 key points to summarise

Reflect individual reflection on what they learnt from the research.

When referring to something you’ve done, such as work experience or a summer school, start the sentence with the word ‘during …’ so that you get straight to the point rather than lots of narrative saying that you attended a summer school.

Each taster runs on a Wednesday afternoon and will last for around one hour.  You can book to attend as many as you like and all you need to take part is access to a computer! 

·       Work experience at STFC is for students in Year 10 – 13 (or equivalent) and usually takes place between April and August.  Due to the uncertainties over the COVID situation, our work experience programme for 2021 will be entirely online.

·       Over summer 2020, RAL and our sister lab Daresbury Laboratory joined together to provide students with online webinar sessions and for summer 2021, we will be offering a similar series of online webinar sessions for students to attend. In addition to this, we will be organising a small number of more intensive one-week virtual project placements (dates TBC).
