On March 3, 1820, the house passed the Missouri Compromise and it was signed into law four days later by President James Monroe. The bill focused on Missouri and Maine, admitting Missouri into the union as a slave state and making Maine a free state. The law also banned slavery in the leftover land from the Louisiana Purchase located north of the southern border of Missouri. The Compromise was originally proposed by Henry Clay in 1819 and the second part of the bill was added the year it was passed.

This pushed the disagreement between the north and south over slavery further because congress was now allowing slavery in certain territories which angered the north but not allowed it in other areas which angered the south. The South did not like the congress could pass laws about slavery which pushed them closer to seceding.

In 1822, Denmark Vesey, a formerly enslaved person, planned a rebellion in Charleston, SC. His plan included executing white slave owners to free the enslaved people of Charleston and then sail to Haiti with his men before they could be caught. However, two men revealed his plan before it could be carried out and he and his men were arrested, many of which were executed.

This even gave the abolitionist movement more motivation to free enslaved people and the movement grew after it. This caused the north and the south to be even more divided on the issue of slavery. This made the south want to secede more because they wanted to make their own harsher laws to further control enslaved people to prevent more rebellions from happening.

The nullification crisis occurred in 1832-33 and was a disagreement between South Carolina and the federal government over tariffs. The tariffs helped the north but did not benefit the southern farmers so South Carolina refused to pay the tariffs and only later agreed to pay when Andrew Jackson passed the Force Bill to send troops to get the tariffs from South Carolina.

This divided the north and the south more becuase it benfited the manufactuers of the north and did not help the south. The south did not want tariffs placed on them or laws that help the north so they wanted to secede even more after this event.

Nat Turner was an enslaved man who believed he was called by God to free slaves in the south. On August 21, 1931, he led many other enslaved people through Virginia, killing white families and slave owners along the way. The authorities stopped the rebellion after they had killed around 55 people and Nat Turner was sentenced to death two months later. This resulted in the south created stricter slave laws.

Because of this rebellion, the south made their laws about slavery stricter which angered the north and further divided the regions on the issue of slavery. The south wanted to hold on tighter to their slaves which urged them closer to secession so they could strengthen their laws without he limit of the federal government.

Before it was part of the union, Texas was a part of Mexico and was controlled by their government. However, over the course of several years, Texas had less of Mexican culture and was more American. This issue, the abolishment of the constitution of 1824, Texas being a part of Coahuila y Texas, and more economic and political issues led to Texas to fight for their independence starting a the Battle of Gonzales on October 2nd, 1835. The war continued on with Mexico having the upper hand until 1836 when Texas won their independence at the Battle of San Janito on April 21.

This divided the north and south because Texas banned slavery but southerners still moved there with their slaves as "indentured servants" which caused disagreements between the regions.

The south wanted to admit Texas as a slave state which made them want to secede more to gain that power.

The Compromise of 1850 was comprised of five laws and was passed in September of 1850. The bill admitted California as a free state, let Utah and New Mexico decide if they were free states or slave states, defined the Texas-Mexico border, and created the Fugitive Slave Act. The Compromise was created by Henry Clay and Stephan Douglas. The Fugitive Slave Act required citizens to help apprehend runaway slaves and took the right of trial by jury away from enslaved people.

The law angered the north because it took more rights away from enslaved people and the north often did not follow the law which angered the south. This made the south want to secede more because more people joined the abolitionist movement due to the law.

The Kansas Nebraska Act was written in 1854 by Stephen Douglas and it repealed the Missouri Compromise. The bill created the two territories of Kansas and Nebraska and said that they would be slave or free states based on popular sovereignty. The creation of this bill repealed the Missouri Compromise because it concerned two territories in the land where slavery was banned in the bill. This led to "Bleeding Kansas" which was an event where many anti slavery groups and pro slavery groups moved to the area to try and sway the vote towards their side. The end result was both states entering the union as free states.

The event showed the divide between the north and the south and the different opinions which only created more of a rift between the groups. It also angered the south because they failed to sway the vote which made urge to secede stronger and greater.
