2. My parents want us to follow in their footsteps but they also want us to figure things out on our own or to strive for something that we love or something better than what they were doing. I think parents should put pressure on their children because without it, their children may see it as, they don’t have to do anything because their parents do not care.
3. Chesley Sullenberger is my hero because he landed a plane in the Hudson River and he had to make the toughest decision in his life before doing so. He didn’t know he he was going to make it to the closest airport or if he had to land the plane in the Hudson River. He has influenced me because he showed me that making the right decision is always right when you listen to your gut and he has helped me make my decisions easier and less painful.

3. “For all the knowledge and pleasure they gave me, the books I read in childhood did not allow me to see myself past Coalwood. Almost all the grown-up Coalwood boys I knew had either joined the military services or gone to work in the mine. I had no idea what the future held in store for me.” (Hickam 11). This quote shows that Homer had no idea what he wanted to do when he grew up. It was forsure that he didn’t want to go to the military or to be a miner. He seems to love reading a lot and even says that’s why he loves Coalwood. He has seen too many older people become miners or join the military. He learned the hard way, that he did no want to do those things.
"For Dad, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the Antichrist, Harry Truman the vice-Antichrist, and UMWA chief John L. Lewis was Lucifer himself. I'd heard Dad list all their deficiencies as human beings whenever my uncle Ken—Mom's brother—came to visit.” (Hickam 17). This shows that Homer Sr. is a very catholic man. This shows he also has no interest in politics. He is not interested at all in Sputnik even though everyone one is at the time. As seen in the chapter, it seems like Homer Sr. and Homer Jr. have nothing in common. Homer Sr. loves sports just like Jim but unlike Homer Jr.

Literary Response #2

To Homer Sr. he see’s Homer as a disappointment or a nobody because he has never had anything in common with him and he didn’t even want Homer when he was a born, because he wanted a girl. We all knew that Homer wasn’t proud of Sonny when he told us that his mom asked, “[why] don’t you ever brag about [Sonny] every once in a while, and Homer asked what he could brag about.” (Hickam pg. 29). This shows that even if he wanted to, there is nothing to brag about Sonny for which shows that his Father looks at him in a disappointing way. We also see Homer Sr.’s good side when he lets Sonny drive the Buick, but not only that, he also had him drive to a valley and they got out and Homer showed him that, “[if] you want to fire off your rockets, here’s the place. Nobody in town can see or hear you. You’ve got the entire valley.” (Hickam pg. 107). It’s seems like Homer is actually starting to support Sonny’s dreams for once in his life. Sonny’s place in the family used to be terrible, but now it seems like its getting much better.
