The author describes Maria Alegre as a happy person and Maria Triste as a sad person. Maria Triste is associated with Maria's new american life. In lines 16 and 17, it states "no longer the Maria Alegre who was born on a tropical island." This evidence shows that Maria Alegre used to live on a tropical island with warm weather. Warm weather is usually associated with a happy mood. Lines 21 through 22 state "nor like the Maria Triste, the lonely barrio girl of my new American life." This evidence shows that Maria Triste is associated with her American life. The evidence also shows that Maria Triste is lonely, setting a bad mood because she does not like her new American life.

In line 12-24 Maria Alegre is a happy barrio girl who was born in the tropical island with her two parents and lives in the house near the water and Maria Triste is a lonely and sad girl who lives in the barrio neighborhood in America. According to the text from line 15-20''I am a different Maria,no longer that Maria Alegre who was born on a tropical island, and who I lived with two parents in a house near the sea until a few month ago''This evidence show in this line that Maria feels happy when she lives in the tropical island.According to the text from line 21-24''The Maria Triste is the lonely barrio girl of my new American life.''This evidence shows that Maria feels lonely and sad living in the barrio neighborhood.Overall, this is the two differences between Maria's two different personal traits.
The author includes these descriptions because these lines describe how Maria's personal traits are different between her America life and Spanish life.

The Maria that the author associate with her''new American life'' is Maria Triste because Maria Triste is a lonely and sad girl who lives in the barrio neighborhood in America.

Maria Alegre is a happy girl that lived with her parents on a tropical island. Maria Triste is a girl that is sad because she is in America. In line 16 it states " no longer the Maria Alegre who was born on a tropical island and who lived with two parents in a house near the sea." This quote shows that when Maria is Alegre she was happy with her parents. In line 21 it states " nor like the Maria Triste the lonely barrio girl of my new American life." This quote shows that when she is Triste she is alone in America with only one parent and no friends. The Maria associated with the new American life is the sad lonely one. This is who Maria Alegre and Maria Triste are.
