For example, when I use EducationPerfect, I can see which students completed the required tasks and how long they spent on them as well. This can be done with DuolingoClassroom and QuizletPlus as well. The data visualization provided allows me to quickly complete a homework check that historically would have been done one on one, verifying paper / journals / binders. 

In my personal life, I love the affordances that the Strava app gives me. Being new to Hong Kong, I appreciate how the app logs the hikes I have completed so that, not only can I see how long they took and how far I went, but also... what their names were! I have used it for my five day bicycle trip through Vietnam, and most recently, for my two Indonesian volcano hikes. When I complete repeated runs, I can see what my best times are for particular stretches. Strava functions as an activity motivator (a basic social media platform as well) as I can see what my friends, and former students are up to physically!

Recently, Nord Anglia has been gradually shifting all of their schools to an MIS platform called iSAMS. As part of my new position in my school, I was tasked with exploring ways to collect, analyse, and share data with our various staff members. I very excited to get going with iSAMS as it is designed to be an MIS/LMS in one package but most exciting for me is that the platform has a teacher dashboard similar to Google Analytics that displays everything about a student from grades to behaviour to attendance. The site then pulls questions on those concepts from their database and assigns them to any students you have selected. When students have completed their assessment, you can see how well students were able to complete questions based on specific learning outcomes. 
I found it helpful as a quick gauge of how our unit of study was progressing...should I speed up, slow down, review specific concepts.

We initially tried to present the data within Excel, but quickly realized it was not robust enough to pull all of the data we needed it to, which was a big advantage for using BI. It is a great way to sit down with a student and make goals about areas of improvement rather than looking at a table of numbers. The image above allows for you to represent their evidence of learning through assessment type or specific assignments. As the teacher you can also compare it to class averages. It is a useful way to present data without overwhelming teachers, while also allowing a viewer to expand data to further explore any data of interest.

I think that exposing students to infographics is a great way for them to develop a different form of literacy. In creating their own infographics, I usually have students make them based on some research-based project they are working on.

This program offers useful data visuals for both teachers and students to help track participation and progress which can be used to set goals. The image I shared, for example, shows the class data (class report), by which a teacher can view the outcome of each student's practice session that day, the fluency score (percentage complete in current operation), Sparkline graphing score fluctuations over time, and daily usage and results in the form of a colour coded icon. Clicking into each student's screen offered teachers a more detailed overview of progress and details such as exactly which facts with which students were struggling. 

Students could also track their own progress in the form of a multiplication (addition, subtraction) chart with mastered facts shaded green, and various stages of progress shown in other colours. This visual was very accessible and informative for students, as they could see exactly which math facts they needed to focus on during practice times as they worked to fill the whole table with green squares. It was motivating for students to see a visual representation of their progress. They set goals for themselves and celebrated achieving those goals.

Although this is a very basic form of visualization, it allows me to follow patterns in scores, completion, or other types of data.

I have used pivot tables along with simple bar and pie charts to display all kinds of student survey data. During the pandemic we were using a bi-weekly check-in for student health and well being and I was collecting and collating the data to share it with teachers. We weren't sharing individual student data but rather looking for trends in wellbeing amongst our cohorts and then trying to intervene when we could. The pie charts made for a really simple comparison week on week to see if well being was changing instead of having to sift through all of the individual data.

Currently, in my school, I find there is a lack of reliance on looking at data or understanding it as an effective tool. We receive data based on district or provincial assessments and analyze the data for student programming, but the next step of using the data to predict is lacking. Personally, using Excel spreadsheets is my everyday tool for tracking my finances and even managing my house plants.
