The theme of the book " The hate u give" is equality, no matter what your gender or race or religion is you should all be treated the same. no one should ever feel like they are not human or like they "don't belong" somewhere just because they are a different race. The sad thing about this book is that no one cared about Khalil's death until they found out that he was shot by a white cop, it should not have mattered that the cop was white people should have been supportive from the beginning. As Starr states in the book “Once upon a time there was a hazel-eyed boy with dimples. I called him Khalil. The world called him a thug.
He lived, but not nearly long enough, and for the rest of my life I'll remember how he died". a young girl should never have to go though life thinking that her friend was a "thug" because of his skin color.

i put my first quote in my theme article but here is my 2nd one “What's the point of having a voice if you're gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn't be?” the reason i chose this quote is because people where silent all throughout 'Khalils death until they figured out that he was shot by a white cop, its so sad that people have voices and they don't use them until the moments after they are needed. why should it matter the color of their skin they are the same.

this book is about so much more then race but it is a major part of the book at one point Star says “I can't change where I come from or what I've been through, so why should I be ashamed of what makes me, me?” thats a great point you should never have to change your self you are who you are. this kind of reminds me of what i used to think i had to do in 5th grade i was constently getting bullied and it made me connect to the book in the way that she though she had to change what made her ,

there are so many connections to this book and most of them are mine but this one really got me. “I’ve seen it happen over and over again: a black person gets killed just for being black, and all hell breaks loose. I’ve Tweeted RIP hashtags, reblogged pictures on Tumblr, and signed every petition out there. I always said that if I saw it happen to somebody, I would have the loudest voice, making sure the world knew what went down.
Now I am that person, and I’m too afraid to speak". this happends way to often and it actually connects to me i constantly stand up for people and makes them feel better but when it comes to me i cant stop thinking about it and how much it kind of hurts.
