The differences between an atom, element and an ion are an atom is composed of particles(protons, electrons, neutrons), an element is composed of atoms, and an ion is an atom with a charge due to either gain or loss of electrons.
2. The differences between a metal and a nonmetal are that while a metal is usually solid at room temperature, a nonmetal exists in all three states. (Liquid, Solid, and gas). Metals are ductile, while non-metals are not ductile. Metals are generally hard, while non-metals are generally soft. 
3. Valence electrons are electrons in the outer shells of atoms that can be lost or shared with  another atom to form a molecule.
