The issues with Japan arose in the 1930s when Japan began to defy the Open Door Policy and take land in northern china using military action. Other disputes included when Japan dismissed the United States demands to withdraw their forces from China. Disputes with Japan did not end until after the bombing of the two major islands Hiroshima (August 6, 1945) and Nagasaki and (August 9, 1945), which were mainly invented by J Robert Oppenheimer who is also known as the "father of the atomic bomb".

The causes of Japan seizing and taking control of Chinese territory is due to the over powering influence and encouragement Nazi Germany had over them. Germany became a "father figure" for Japan as they were controlling a large portion of Europe at the time

The significance of the many disputes with Japan even before the United States entered the war, is that Japan constantly tried the anger the United States for not recognizing their territory in China. Japan tried to irk the United States by sinking naval ships in the pacific. this also created a snowball of later events that will later lead to the bombing of Pear Harbor and the United States entering WW2.
