Guiding Question: How did technological advances affect the progress of the war?
Claim: Many different weapons and other forms of fighting were made either for WWI or during the war. An army with more modern weapons will have a higher advantage than an army that uses older items.

History net reports that "On April 22, 1915, German artillery fired cylinders containing chlorine gas in the Ypres area, the beginning of gas attacks in the First World War."

The evidence shows that the gas attacks that Germans started were a new advancement made in the beginning of WWI that created a new way to fight that could only be prevented by using gas masks, which hadn’t been invented yet.

The new idea would have naturally helped the Germans a lot, especially considering it was something no one had seen before. If the other armies had never heard of it, they would have no way to prevent it, thus making the Germans very powerful until the opposing side figured out how to protect themselves from the chlorine gas.

History net also emphasizes the fact that "The 20th century’s most significant leap in traditional weapons technology was the increased lethality of artillery due to improvements in gun design, range and ammunition."

The article argues that better design, range and artillery were added to some traditional weapons to make them more deadly.

When an army upgrades their weaponry, they make their job of winning the war easier on themselves. The better weapons or weapon designs that an army has, the better chance they have at succeeding.

A video by HISTORY claims that “The most determined soldiers cannot oppose a machine gun that fires hundreds of rounds a minute.”

The video portrays the fact that no matter how smart or quick you are, you need to use more modern means of attack or else you will most likely be killed by something that is more advanced than your current strategy.

Even if an army used an open combat strategy and won one battle, there was no way to survive the battles in WWI without using trench warfare. Weapons were less advanced when there were open combat battles. However, in WWI they had machine guns that could fire fast and take out just about anyone the second they stepped into no-man's land.
